MARK LUCAS & THE DEADSETTERS + GHOST TRAIN

Sat 31st May 2014
Mark Lucas & The Dead Setters
Special Guests Ghost Train
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

Americana fixed with a determinedly Australian stamp, Mark Lucas spins tales of the ordinary and the extraordinary to a backdrop of guitars, fiddle, mandolin and three part harmonies, embracing folk, country, blues and roots with a foot in the past and ear to the future.
Together with the Dead Setters he’s have played everywhere from corner pubs to major festivals, releasing half a dozen albums along the way.
If you’re looking for the real thing they know where it went…

Praise for current cd ”Putting on the Dog”:
“perfectly exemplifies Lucas’s love of the Heartworn Highways singer-songwriter school and his determination to tell Australian stories. Backed by the Dead Setters Lucas sounds right at home – like he’s where he’s destined to be.”
– Martin Jones, Rhythms Magazine
“A literate songwriter, in the tradition of Texas troubadours Joe Ely, James McMurtry & Robert Earl Keen, whose vignettes come alive with recognisable characters & familiar backdrops, Mark has pulled out all stops here to produce his strongest and most accessible album yet”.
– Kim Cheshire, Country Update Magazine
“An album that puts Lucas up there with the best of singer songwriters, Americana with Australian stories.” – RootsofRock.net

Local band Ghost Train wil, be opening up the night and bringing a lot of blues based original material with some strong reggae undertones and some of that early eighties inner Sydney sound.
Ghost Train are Ian Collins – guitar, keyboards, vocals, Michele Guerin – vocals, Glen Davidson – bass, guitar, vocals, Eddie Fisher – drums and vocals.
The members of Ghost Train have played with and collaborated with many iconic Australian artists including X and Spy V Spy. A typical Ghost Train set contains material from their two CD’s,The Shelter Sessions and Black Ride as well as covers by REM, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Steve Earle, etc.

Driving rhythms, soaring harmony vocals, dirty bluesy guitar, a lot of blues based original material with lyrics touching on the darker side of life, mixed with some eighties style reggae and a bit of country, this is Ghost Train. Everyone writes in their own style, so there is a lot of variety with the originals but somehow it still all sounds like Ghost Train.

BILLY WASHINGTON’S – DRIFTERS

Sat 17th May 2014
Billy Washington’s DRIFTERS
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

Performing the songs that soared into American and Worldwide Top 40 charts on numerous occasions during the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s.

The Drifters are an institution…
Very few vocal groups have remained popular for over forty years, and in an area notable for its lack of consistency, the Drifters’ longevity is almost without parallel.

The Drifters’ do-wop and R&B/Soul sound evolved from the groups that put close harmony to the songs of Tin Pan Alley before and during the Second World War.
The Drifters made a radical improvement to this style by introducing gospel to popular music, the group helped create the beginnings of rock ‘n’ roll and in the early fifties rapidly became the most popular act among black recording groups.

The Drifters provided the soundtrack for a generation with more than a decade of successful record releases, with classics like “Under the Boardwalk”, “Save the Last Dance for Me” “My Girl” and “Saturday Night at the Movies”.

The Current lineup of the group features leader Billy Washington, born in Los Angeles California in 1939, he joined shortly after the Drifters’ formation in the mid fifties, coming from a background in professional sports, developing a love for singing and performing while attending church and later in the armed services.

Today the Drifters remain as popular as ever with concerts and cabaret appearances encompassing the same sparkling formula that results in live performances of
un-equalled entertainment and excitement.

In the history of popular music there are few vocal groups who qualify as legendary members of the Hall of Fame…
The Drifters are such a group!!!

THE WOOHOO REVUE + EDEMA RUH

Sat 10th May 2014
The Woohoo Revue
Special Guests Edema Ruh
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

Doors Open 7:30pm. Show Starts 8pm.

Call them what you will – “Balkan gypsy brass band”, “roaring ’20s swing ensemble”, “Wild West fiddle contest” or a “soundtrack for Looney Tunes” – it barely scratches the surface. There are few, if any parallels to the sound of The Woohoo Revue.

A fiendishly talented sextet of horns, strings and drums, The Woohoo Revue have forged their reputation throughout Australia as a festival favourite with their signature sound and an adrenalin-fuelled celebration fit for dancing, drinking, and ignoring tomorrow. Their fiery compositions and virtuosic musicianship invoke a feeling of romance and bravado. Every tune expresses a sense of occasion, transporting the listener to a rampaging after-party at a circus sideshow in a palatial ballroom.
Picture yourself as the star of a technicolour movie surrounded by Hellzapoppin’ dancers swinging a Charleston two step, a 1920’s speakeasy in a fantasy setting where all your wildest dreams come true. You find yourself dancing a loose waltz, being thrust into dangerous spins by laughing friends and as your troubles wash away, a tall dark stranger takes you in their embrace and moves you gracefully, elegantly through a passionate tango. Without warning, a Dixieland street party erupts, you link arms for a circle dance, you clap, you shout, you feel alive. You are transported by The Woohoo Revue and you will love them for it.

The band has barely stopped touring, performing in excess of 100 shows per year at venues and festivals throughout the country, including recent performances at WOMADelaide, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Bellingen Global Carnival, Australasian World Music Expo, Melbourne International Gypsy Festival, and Falls Festival to name a few.

Katoomba RSL had the pleasure of having them perform in 2012 as part of FrogFest A Celebration of Progressive Folk Music and we are very excited to welcome them back for a Headline show after their blistering performances at this year’s annual Blue Mountains Music Festival!
Don’t miss your chance to jump and sway away on our large dance floor when they come back to the Mountains.

“The group all are amazingly talented musicians, and the Woohoo sound is a frenzied blur of Balkan, gypsy, swing and jazz. You know the kind of sound I´m shooting at; the kind that makes you dance by kicking your legs about haphazardly and spinning until you can feel your brain burning. The band managed to sap the entire populace of the NSC of energy, beating them senseless with their whirling tango tunes. Big big love for the Woohoo.” – thedwarf.com.au

Opening up the evening will be 7-piece band Edema Ruh to bring you Folk music from places that don’t exist!
Edema Ruh are known for their high energy live shows, esoteric song stylings, and sense of adventure, that their music creates. They indiscriminately blend elements of wildly varying styles. Edema Ruh are deeply entrenched in the Folk Tradition, while mashing Balkan, Celtic, Gypsy, Latin and Caribbean and American styles with the can-do attitude of Free Jazz, and the intensity of Metal – sometimes all within the same song. Sprinkled atop this mountain of musical mayhem are stories filled with tragic and beautiful characters, adventures, irony and very poor advice. They create a sound that is difficult to describe, but certain to intrigue, excite, and have every able body in the room dancing wildly.
They secretly wish they were Gypsies.
