CANCELLED – THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND Live in Concert at Baroque Room, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, SAT 30th April 2022

There is some good news and not so good news: Jess is pregnant (yay for
another new little person) however TCFB are being extra careful, mostly
because of sound dB levels in smaller spaces, and also partly so that
she has the capacity to record their new album now that it has a
definite time limit.

Thank you for your purchase and support of this (and other events) and especially to those that patiently held on through the reschedule due to lockdown too! We are really disappointed that we couldn’t enjoy this fabulous act with you again (especially when dancing has just been confirmed!) and we are looking forward to a time further down the line when this might be possible.
For now if you are after a dancing fix then we have the very fun ‘Soul Movers’ on 2nd  April and the slightly naughty ‘Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys’ on 28th May.
All ticket holders have been emailed on 24/02/22 with the option to refund or transfer their tickets.

ARIA nominees THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND are a mesmerising and fiery acoustic 4-piece that deliver high-energy Chainsaw Future-Folk. Post-Apocalyptic World Music. Celtic Energy. Swamp-Stomping Hoe down. Dance-Inciting Mayhem. Hardcore Gypsy Passion!

The Crooked Fiddle Band formed in 2006 through their mutual love of the energy and intensity of various traditional world music. Whilst writing and arranging, they discovered that this energy was shared by the other music they love: there seems to be a common thread between the frenetic accompaniment of gypsy, klezmer and punk rock; between the twisting rhythms of math-metal and Balkan folk; between the clear tonalities of Scandinavian folk, Celtic folk, and cinematic post rock.
All these influences went into the mix, but what came out was The Crooked Fiddle Band. The sound they love is dark and often driving, but also writhing and ecstatic. They have jumped around with whirling crowds at festivals, bars and dirty warehouse parties throughout Europe and Australia and also played their more cinematic sounds in the Opera Theatre of the Sydney Opera House.
This music they have sometimes called ‘chainsaw folk’ – even though they are pro-conservation – but others have called it “14th century Romanian metal”, “thrash folk”, “whirlwind gypsy” and even “what Sepultura would sound like if they provided the soundtrack to a hyperactive version of O Brother Where Art Thou.” So whilst the search continues for a name for their genre, they are mainly concerned with making music with melody, energy and intensity.

Driven by the beautiful and furious fiddling of Jess Randall (also on Lennart Lovdin Nyckelharpa), and underpinned by a rhythm section featuring Gordon Wallace (Gilet guitar, a Wheeler Custom Lutherie guizouki and a Fylde mandolin and cittern), Mark Stevens (double bass, Appalachian dulcimer, charango) and Joe Gould (drum kit, hand percussion, garbage bin, vocals) the Crooked Fiddle Band sound blasts, rocks and grooves to the point of dementia, compelling listeners into a joyous frenzy.

Their latest offering ‘Another Subtle Atom Bomb’ takes the band’s blistering violin-led live show and creates soundtracks to their feelings around climate change. From angsty and furious folk tunes to fantastical imagined worlds full of ecstatic hope, this is The Crooked Fiddle Band’s most personal album yet.

Their music has been described by Brian Eno as “…completely surprising: the music is original and quixotic. I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything else like it!”

“This band really is a national treasure and testament to the infinite talent that keeps manifesting in our backyard… this group have re-invented folk music as it is known… The Crooked Fiddle Band charmed the audience into submission.” – Vanessa Lahey, Australian Stage

“When The Crooked Fiddle Band took to the stage, it was as though someone had put 10,000 volts through the dance floor.” – BEAT magazine.

“AN IRRESISTIBLE FORCE OF NATURE.” – Tony Hillier, The Australian

“Luke Escombe is a rock-soul singer, raconteur, blistering blues guitarist, comedian and songwriter, and is very good at them all” – Sydney Morning Herald

Combining poetic lyrics with irresistible grooves and a renowned knack for finding humour in dark places, Luke Escombe is venturing out of his northern beaches idyll to perform an intimate show in the conservatory at Hotel Etico, 11 Montgomery St, Mt Victoria.

The ARIA-nominated owner of “Sydney’s sexiest man voice” is stepping aside from his band leader role with The Vegetable Plot to do a rare solo gig, delving into his back catalogue of albums like Mantown, Creeper Vine, Skeleton Blues and Chronic Symphonic, as well as previewing songs from his first new solo album in over five years: Whale Beach Road.

A formidable guitarist, engaging singer-songwriter, and highly entertaining vocalist, Luke Escombe’s shows are always fun, funny and (just a little bit) filthy.

Corn Nut Creek are a powerhouse female Alt-Country/Americana duo, hailing from America and Australia. Their original music has been awarded as a category finalist and juror’s top five selection in the 2020 Blues & Roots Radio International Song Contest. The band features the artful banjo work of Tanya Bradley, paired with the deft fiddle and soulful vocals of Danielle Vita, 1st place winner of 2020 Deer Creek Fiddlers Convention (USA) vocalist award. The duo’s original songs tell raw stories of womanhood which are transporting, honest and effortless. Their story is unique; they met in Hong Kong and performed as the Dulcet Tone Collective, then moved back to their respective countries and began writing music together remotely. After four years collaborating in different countries, they reunited—this time in Australia. They have been featured on ABC Country’s ‘Saturday Night Country’, Bluegrass Country Radio’s ‘Foggy Hollow’, WDVX Tennessee’s ‘Sweetgrass’ and Blues & Roots Radio, among many others. They are currently working on their second album, set to be released in August 2021.

KimberleyWheelerIMG_1665web300

Kimberley Wheeler has the uncanny knack of being able to find the right note and the right turn of phrase in the creation and performing of her music. From a classical beginning, this award-winning songwriter came to acoustic roots music along a winding trail through grunge metal, bluegrass and Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks. With a voice described as Celtic Chocolate, she is often compared to singers such as Linda Thompson, Linda Ronstadt and Gillian Welch. Her luscious vocals and gritty songs underpin the band’s acoustic folk pedigree. Kimberley’s late discovery of Tim O’Brien’s, Red On Blonde (a take on Bob Dylan), opened an explosive portal to the folk universe that has directed her ever since. Variously, she has been a member of all-star bluegrass outfit, Uncle Bill, played with Dan Hicks and now has her own band, Roadside Holiday. In 2017 she instigated and curated the all Aussie, Women in String Bands, CD, has been President of Australian Bluegrass & Old Time Association and presently sits on the Musicians Australia Leadership Committee. She is a current finalist in Tamworth Songwriters Association Awards.

LIVE MUSIC

DeepseaLights221001_DSL_PromoImg_01  DeepseaLights_06
Deepsea Lights (synths, laptop, midi controller)

Captivating vocals, catchy melodies, live looping, spoken word; Deepsea Lights put a lot of focus on pulling a crowd in, and creating and holding a space. In 2019 the duo released their first full length album “The Space Between”. Lying somewhere between folk and trip-hop, their uncommon sound can move from rolling bass lines and ethereal vocal melodies, to beats composed entirely of household objects being struck with other household objects, to aggressive hip-hop rants, to soft rainy-day folk songs.

Night Diver - Emily Williams 4
Night Diver & Emily Williams (cello & laptop)

Night Diver is the solo music project of musician and cello player Emily Williams. Her main instrument remains at the centre, augmented by sounds of sampled glass, steel & kinetic toys pitched & percussive. The music is emotionally charged with revolving arpeggios which drift around a motif of atmospheric, low-end drone-like ambience, disquieting moody melodies & airy experimental minimalism.

Charlie McMahon & Peter Strong w/ special guest Jason Thornton
Dingo Gringo / Grumblemorph (electronic: micro synths & sax)
Dingo Gringo is a didgeridoo and electro crossbreed of sound by Charlie McMahon and Peter Strong. Charlie fronted the seminal Gondwanaland Band that prefigured the world music and Indigenous cultural revival by a decade, while Peter cut his name in the dance-music free-party rave scenes of the ’90s. The name Dingo Gringo evokes the global-electro Cumbia and up-vibe feel of much of their music. Charlie McMahon (deservedly referred to as Bone Man) is an ARIA award winner, and Australian didgeridoo legend, who is best known for his bone shaking didgeridoo riffs such as the “wobble” and “ride”. Playing didgeridoo for 59 years makes Charlie a most senior didgeridoo player, and he is referred to by Didgeridoo Virtuoso, Mark Atkins, as ‘tjilpi’ which is the desert word for elder. It is well known that no other didgeridoo player has done as much as Charlie in the way of inventing didgeridoo concepts to make the didgeridoo effective in many genres of music. Maningrida elders Djelkera Wood and Djana recognise Charlie as the leading creator of didgeridoo concepts and have complemented Charlie for inventing ‘complex and interesting ways of playing didjeridu’. Charlie is also the creator of the Didjeribone™, which is a pitch variable “slide” didgeridoo.

Grumblemorph is the solo live electronic music wing of Peter Strong. The live Grumblemorph project was active in the ’90s existing alongside other jamming, social and activist collectives like Non Bossy Posse, Vibe Tribe, Ohms Not Bombs, Organarchy Sound System and Reclaim The Streets. In 2022, Peter brings Gumblemorph back as live analogue grooves peppered with digitally captured sampling – more about improv playing of micro synths in a way to traverse unexpected sonic territories in the realm of post-rave groove and squelch.

Internationally acclaimed saxophonist Jason Thornton has been thrilling audiences worldwide for decades. He has toured and played with the likes of Prince’s after party band, George Coleman, James Taylor, Gloria Estefan, Cher and Frank Sinatra… and locally with Master’s Apprentices, Matt Finish, Angry Anderson and Swanee…to name but a few. Described as a true chameleon, Jason is equally at home playing rock and blues as he is playing jazz, funk, RnB or reggae. Although very definitely a fine example of a modern musician, his playing shows a true understanding and reverence to the historical greats.

Mataya
Mataya & Micky Young (sax & vocals)

Surrounded by the live music scene growing up in the Blue Mountains, Mataya was heavily influenced by jazz and soul, which has led to the unique sound of her debut single ‘Fine China’ and sophomore release ‘You’. Having collaborated with some of Australia’s biggest acts, Mataya has featured on Hermitude’s hit single ‘The Buzz’, and Thundamentals’ classic ‘Sally’. Mataya is also a dynamic performance member of the upcoming electrifying collective – Haiku Hands. Mataya will perform with her father, saxophonist Micky Young. GREAT SOUTHERN NIGHTS & FUSION BOUTIQUE present MARTINEZ AKUSTICA + MARTIN FOOTE in Concert at Baroque Room, Katoomba, Blue Mountains

Great Southern Nights in association with Fusion Boutique Present
MARTINEZ AKUSTICA / VICTOR MARTINEZ PARADA TRIO

+ Special Guest MARTIN FOOTE
Live in Concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

SATURDAY 9th April 2022
Doors Open 3:30pm | Show Start 4:30pm

Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 15 Katoomba St, Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
– NEW ENTRY VIA THE CARRINGTON HOTEL DRIVEWAY –

Chilean-born, Victor Martinez Parada, is recognised as one of the world’s finest classical Latin-American avant-garde solo guitarists.

With his sons, Andro and Dauno Martinez, he led the family guitar trio, Martinez Akustica, who performed professionally from 1997 until 2012 throughout Australia and internationally. All three members played six string acoustic and electric guitar, bass and also used their instruments as percussion and vocal beat box. One minute they played in unison, the next in harmony, then across and against each other. It was calm, then chaotic, beautiful, then forceful. It was difficult to fully describe them until you’d heard them. Their interplay and understanding that flowed through them was inspiring, endearing and infectious. They truly captivated their audiences as they stretched each other’s ability with a flourish here and an astonishing variation there. These incredible players were on the must-see list for anyone who played a guitar, anyone who aspired to playing guitar and anyone who enjoyed listening to guitar.

Each of the members now have individual careers but are thrilled to re-unite especially for WOMADelaide and after a period of 11 years we are particularly excited to be able to present them in the Blue Mountains again.

“Victor’s ear is such that he’s able to peel away the thump & swish of epic early eighties Britpop production to find the heart of a song not even its writers seemed to recognise. He honours the composition, rather than his own virtuosity. This humility, an abject absence of vanity, is a hallmark of his musicianship. Indeed, it’s the defining characteristic. It’s emblematic of Parada’s truly rare & precious gift for arrangement. And it’s a talent that comes to the fore again and again throughout the evening.
‘You Are the Sunshine of My Life’ is one of the greatest songs ever written. And, if it’s possible, Victor’s Fantasy on it only but enhances its status in the popular canon. In his hands, it becomes around a ten-minute opus. It’s as if he’s rolling out a red carpet for the tune, which progressively & unmistakably insinuates itself. The rhythmic flavour of flamenco informs the arrangement and imbues a passionate urgency. It’s a virile, avant-garde take on a Wonderful song. The Chilean Hendrix does it again.’ – Syke on Stage

“Martinez Akustica had an interesting approach to jazz and pop, highly energetic jazz laced with flamenco flair and modern improvisation by three great guitarists.” – George Benson

“Their live show left me inspired each night of the tour. Definitely some of the most talented musicians I have ever seen.” – Michael Franti – Spearhead

“The music benefits from their intensity and passion…. so does the listener!” – Jeff Hamilton (Diana Krall)

“This is probably the greatest acoustic guitar band in the country – and yet another must-see at Bluesfest.” – Byron Bay Blues Festival

“The Gypsy Kings are happy. It has been incredible playing with the musicians Martinez Akustica. Our concert has been a great success in Sydney. We hope to play together next time in another place on Earth.” – The Gypsy Kings

“The band has an endearing, inspiring and infectious energy and it shows in their performance” – The Sunday Telegraph

MartinFooteFB2300

Martin Foote is a gifted guitarist from the Blue Mountains of NSW, who plays with a passion and flair that turns heads whenever he takes the stage. Growing up in a musical family, Martin began playing guitar at the age of ten, taught by his father, Nigel Foote, who gave him a strong foundation in folk-blues fingerpicking styles. Through meeting guitarists Joe Robinson and Michael Fix, Martin discovered the work of the legendary Australian guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel. Over the next few years, Martin attended Tommy’s guitar workshop and two residential guitar camps, at the end of which he performed Tommy’s arrangement of Classical Gas with the Master himself. Martin has performed for Blue Mountains Music Festival, Sydney Blues & Roots Festival, Sydney Royal Botanical Gardens, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Katoomba Winter Magic Festival, Horizon Festival, Hunters Hill Club, Katoomba RSL, Blue Mountains Folk, plus Australian Citizenship ceremonies for Blue Mountains City Council. After winning the Busking Competition at the 2015 Winter Magic Festival, Martin composed several instrumental pieces and used the prize (a day’s recording at Songcave Studios) to record his seven-track EP, ‘Moving On’ which was released at the 2018 Blue Mountains Music Festival. Martin has taught guitar for Waratah School of Music (Blue Mountains Music Academy) and at Blue Mountains Guitar School since 2015. This has however moved online since the pandemic began. Martin is currently studying a bachelor of music at the Australian Institute of Music.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Music runs through Declan Kelly’s blood. It’s been a part of him since  the very beginning. With an Irish father and a Maori mother, herself a talented musician, he was encouraged to learn the drums and guitar at a young age.
He’s aligned himself with some of the greatest Australian musicians we’ve seen, plying his trade with The Beefs (with Alex Lloyd), and The Bondi Cigars, before releasing his debut album ‘Tales From The Neighbourhood’ in 2005 with support from the late great Andy Glitre.

Late 2019 saw Declan Kelly release his fourth studio album ‘Views With A Room’, which saw Declan searching for answers while tackling issues of masculinity and despondency. Declan Kelly has a way of captivating fans with his roots and his rhythm. ‘Views with a Room’ – featuring the beautifully stripped back singles ‘Catch Your Ego’ and ‘Take Me in Tonight’ – was a deep and reflective project that engaged with themes too rarely discussed by male artists. It is easy to see why Declan has gained the respect of fans, media and esteemed colleagues such as Bernard Fanning, Katie Noonan, Bobby Alu and Kasey Chambers through his authenticity and spectacular musicianship.

During the 2020/21 pandemic, Declan put aside touring plans, and spent the lockdown period back in the studio. The first single from his upcoming album, ‘Headlock’ encompasses the insecurities of having to navigate through these unprecedented times. Mixed by Grammy-nominated producer Justin Stanley (Prince, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Nikka Costa), the cold feeling of isolation is overcome by warm layers of folk rock, Marvin Gaye soul and Declan’s comforting vocals.

Nic Danta is a Katoomba based singer-songwriter and one-time performer with the Spooky Men’s Choral. Nic blends Dylan-style folk music with pop sensibilities influenced by Billy Bragg and the Cure.
Performing with Nic will be two Blue Mountains legends, Matt Tonks on guitar, piano and vocals and Paddy Connor on Irish Pipes. As a group, they create moody and emotional music with lyrics that tell intimate stories of people and place.
Nic will be launching his album, ‘Buried at Sea’ and you can view Black Dog, the first video from the album below.
This gig will also be a chance to farewell Neill Duncan, the heart and soul of music in the mountains who sadly passed away in December 2021. Neill produced and played on Nic’s album and should have been sharing the stage.

Crow Mountain are an Australian old-time country and folk group, performing original, traditionally flavoured tunes of unnerving honesty and effortless beauty.
Drawing on their Blue Mountains roots, Megan Legg (mandolin) and Ben Thomas (banjo and guitar), blend old-time, bluegrass instrumentation with honey-dipped harmonies, painting aural portraits of human frailty and grit, sorrow and strength, love and redemption. Their original songs are rich in the sound and story-telling of traditional country music – of growing up in isolation; jumping freight trains to get where you need to be; of getting out of town and returning beaten, with the past at your heels.
They released their debut EP, ‘Shallow Water’ in 2018, and their new EP,
‘The Higher We Go’ is available to purchase and stream now.

Led by long-legged Lizzie Mack, a charismatic front woman with a penchant for groovy 1960’s vintage, and featuring the equally visually spectacular legend on lead guitar, much-loved ex-Red Wiggle, Murray Cook, The Soul Movers musical tour-de-force across a hip and funky musical spectrum of 1960s and 70s Soul, Pop, and rock and roll, making them one of the most exciting live and festival acts on the touring circuit today.

Backed by a band oozing with musical talent which features a star-studded cast of musicians who count themselves among the best in Australia. At times described as a “supergroup”, Lizzie Mack and Murray Cook are joined by bassists Matt Crawford and Tony Mitchell (Sherbet), Marko Simec on keys (Waiting For Guinness) and legendary session drummer Luke Herbert (Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers, Don Walker etc). Together they deliver a unified and electrifying live performance that impresses audiences and critics alike wherever they go.

The Soul Movers have recorded in both the US and Australia to create four critically acclaimed albums – including their current for ABC Music ‘Evolution’ where the band retained their soulful roots while also branching out and bringing in more retro-rock, soul-funk and even disco elements. The record captures The Soul Movers incredible energy, broad influences and diverse talent. ‘Evolution’ was supported by four singles and video clips, including ‘Circles’, which saw the original Wiggles lineup reunited to lift the spirits of a nation during lockdown with a retro workout video a la Richard Simmons. The album and singles have been met with widespread critical acclaim and their YouTube and socials lit up with a response of love and admiration for the band’s visual panache and exuberant flair.
They proceeded to sell out live shows across the nation, leaving audiences enthralled wherever they went and eager to join The Soul Movers family. Now they had a cohesive offering and territory that audiences responded to with equal measures of recognition, passion, and enthusiastic interaction.

“Taking in a Soul Movers live show is an essential experience for anyone seriously interested in that broad umbrella of “live music.” – Bernie Howitt, RAM Magazine

“Murray Cook and Lizzie Mack have forged an alliance so powerful, so fearsomely funky, that The Soul Movers have become one of the most exciting live bands in the land…” – Glenn A. Baker – Music Historian, AM

“The Soul Movers are aptly named for their body-driven music that will have any seated crown writhing in their seats. Fronted by Lizzie Mack and Murray Cook (aka the original red Wiggle), the group combine electrifying guitar riffs with 60s soul-groove and a sprinkling of pop to form a night out that audiences will never forget. TSM’s high energy bursts through to deliver a new album which is a tasty collection of surprise and delight.” – Tait McGregor, The AU Review

“This is music that is all about the soul – its passion, emotional nuance, heartbreak, celebration, hurt and love. ‘Bona Fide’ is the sound of a talented, experienced bunch of soul-music lovers making a record where the essence of this passion and feeling is coursing through their veins. You can’t really ask for anything more.” Brian Wise, Editor, Rhythms Magazine

LINDA MITZI_0166 copy crop 300

With a love of sunflowers, real people, and the freedom to express herself as a songwriter, Linda Mizzi brings light, honesty and a touch of darkness into her songs. She tells real stories through her music, with strong, lyric based songs; that are upfront, warm, quirky, charming and sometimes even confronting. Linda lets her muse wander where it may, “Of course, music is far more porous than genre-definers would have us believe, and such is the case with her music.” – Michael Smith.

Based in her home town of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, she is blessed to be surrounded by so many like-minded artists and musicians, and it is on the festival circuit and in front of a listening audience that she truly comes into her own. Linda often performs as ‘The Linda Mizzi Trio’, featuring fellow local musicians Glenn Skarratt on Mandolin and Alex Keller on Bass guitar. The trio have reformed again after a period of four years and are currently working on a new album. With a strong direction towards country/folk, you will still hear undertones of blues that are very common to Linda’s style on previous albums. However, the combination of older songs with newer tracks, written and arranged together as a trio, will feature a more stripped back approach, with the primary focus on Linda’s often thought provoking lyrics. This collaboration is strong, and one to watch.

For a taste of what is to come, you will have the chance to enjoy Linda in solo mode as she opens for The Soul Movers in her home town.

Fusion Boutique Presents
T. WILDS (trio)
‘Ten Songs’ Album Launch
Live in Concert upstairs at Bootlegger Bar

New Rescheduled Date – Friday 1st April 2022
Doors Open 8:30pm | Performance Start 9pm

Venue: BOOTLEGGER BAR 92 Bathurst Rd, Katoomba NSW 2780, Blue Mountains

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

T Wilds celebrates the release of her new album ‘Ten Songs’. Recorded in the Blue Mountains with her band partner Matt Toohey, ‘Ten Songs’ sees Tania Bowers mark a spectacular return to songwriting and performance, stripping back the electronic production flourishes of her early material as Via Tania and crafting, authentic, left of centre folk music.
The ‘Ten Songs’ which feature on the album revel in delicate, minimal arrangements with a dark, reflective edge. ‘Ten Songs’ includes the singles ‘I Swim’ and ‘Curious Moon’.

Originally growing up in the Melbourne and Sydney (indie) music scene with her band Spdfgh, Tania relocated to Chicago for quite some time where she played her music with members of Tortoise, Wilco, and Giant Sand.
The impact of T. Wilds’ voice is immediate and definitive. Distinctive, delicate yet powerful, and instantly captivating. Her voice provides the perfect vehicle for her ever-expanding catalogue of songs that are wise and curious, daydreamy and evocative. She is influenced by the beauty of her surroundings and the natural world. Landing somewhere between the sophisticated soul of Sade, the wistful yearning of Nico, and the country-tinged soul of Gillian Welch, her music continues to evolve into its own genre of delicate indie-folk.

Come and join us for a special intimate launch of her new album upstairs at Bootlegger Bar. Tania will be performing in trio format with Matt Toohey (Kid Cornered) on guitar and Anna West on cello.

This will be one show only and a limited capacity and we advise booking quickly to avoid disappointment!
