CLAUDE HAY & THE GENTLE ENEMIES + THE HONEY STOMPERS + KELL TAYLOR

Sat 29th March 2014 8pm-late FREE ENTRY!
Claude Hay & The Gentle Enemies + The Honey Stompers + Kell Taylor
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

CLAUDE HAY and band THE GENTLE ENEMIES (The Rhythm Section from Chase The Sun!) Including Ryan Van Gennip on Bass and Jon Howell on Drums.
Special Guests Kell Taylor and Band + The Honey Stompers

Claude Hay took out the Best Male Vocalist category at the 2013 Australia Blues Music Chain Awards adding to the swag of awards he received for his second album, 2010’s ‘Deep Fried Satisfied’. In the same week, Claude Hay’s song ‘Stone Face’ successfully made the semi-finals in the Blues category at the International Songwriters Competition, which is judged by industry heavy weights such as Bruce Iglauer (CEO, Alligator Records), Tom Waits, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi and other internationally recognised producers and label A&R executives.

Claude Hay, long established as pretty much the world’s best ‘One Man Band’, has made an about face and formed a real band for the release of his new single in 2014. The new line up is seeing Claude break the shackles and let his inner rock god fly while still keeping in touch with his roots.

The real musicians replacing Claude’s looping machines are Ryan Van Gennip (Chase The Sun, iOta) and Jon Howell (Chase The Sun, Leonardo’s Bride), neither of whom are reticent about pumping out some blues-rock boogaloo.

Those of you who were at Claude’s recent live DVD filming in Katoomba can tell you that this guy has really got ‘it’ – So come on down to the show to experience a whole new thing from one of The Mountains’ favourite musical sons.

THE PRANNIES – MIKE KERIN, TINKER DUFFY, GED CORBAN & MICHAEL VIDALE

Sat 22nd March 2014 – FREE ENTRY!
The Prannies: Mike Kerin, Tinker Duffy, Ged Corben & Michael Vidale
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

Mike Kerin, virtuoso fiddler (Slim Dusty’s favourite), sultry singer and all-round musical genius leads this eclectic band of misfits with diverse backgrounds in rock, Irish, bluegrass, old timey and everything in between.
Tinker, long time Mountains dweller, plays fiery accordion and sings with husky vocals.
Ged Corben holds the band together with his powerhouse rhythm guitar and delicate slide and mandolin work. Ged toured extensively as lead guitarist with the Lime Spiders.
Underpinning the Prannies’ lush and powerful sound is Michael Vidale on semi acoustic bass.

Winner of no less than 6 Golden Guitars, Fiddle virtuoso Mike Kerin leads this four piece lineup comprised of longtime collaborators & stalwarts of the Oz Folk & Bluegrass scene. Apart from producing, arranging, recording & playing on many fine albums, Mike played for 10 years with 80‘s Country fave’s The Flying Emus, for more than 20 years with Slim Dusty in his Traveling Country Band, and currently tours with Anne Kirkpatrick & numerous national & international acts. Mike was the featured artist on the recently released ABC Fiddle Album “The Devil’s Instrument”. He has also played as a featured artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, touring Australia & Slovenia.

Tinker Duffy is no stranger to the NSW Folk scene. Hailing originally from Armidale, she has dazzled audiences with her fiery accordion playing from Newtown to Gulgong, & Yeppoon to Port Fairy over the last 20 years. She has had a lifelong involvement in the traditional music, song and dance of Ireland as well as in bush bands, dance bands, choirs and sessions.

Mike & Tinker are joined by longtime co-horts Michael Vidale on electric double bass, & Ged Corben on guitar. Michael, winner of 4 Golden Guitar Awards himself, centres the quartet with his electrifying musicianship. He is a highly sought-after player, engineer & producer. Amongst his current associations are The Bushwackers, Don Walker’s Suave F..ks, Anne Kirkpatrick Band, The BlueMoons, The Shafters to name a few. He has played over the years with Jimmy & The Boys, Slim Dusty and The Traveling Country Band, the Flying Emus, The Whitlams and Fiddlers Festival. He credits his musicality to Louis Armstrong who, he says, once held baby Michael in one hand and played the trumpet with the other.

Ged Corben on guitar, mandolin & resonator forms the other half of the rhythm section & has at one time or another played with The Original Cruel Sea, is lead guitarist with The Lime Spiders & moonlights with Rebecca Hancock & The Prison Wives, amongst others.

All four were longtime members of the now defunct Wheelers & Dealers, winners of numerous National Folk Awards, who toured NSW, Victoria & Queensland extensively over the last 15 years.

The band play an eclectic uptempo mix of Celtic & American folk, with a touch of Western Swing & Roots thrown in. They feature material from Mike & Tinker’s new album “ For Good Measure”, & Mike’s solo album “ The Dining Room Sessions”.

They often incorporate live Belly Dance and Circus Arts in their shows. Their Performance evokes the old world and the new, the eerily haunting air of sounds and movements from the East, with definite roots in the West. Influences are far and wide but range from New Orleans Jazz, to Eastern European Roma and Klezmorim music, Manouche Swing, to Acoustic Metal.
Syncopated Rhythms and original dance vignettes. Guaranteed to get you up and dancing! It will put the p in your pistol and the zing in your zinger. Guaranteed to boost your bravado and perk your package, tempt your temptress with The Underscore Orkestra. An experience you have to see and hear to believe.

The Underscore Orkestra are based out of Portland Oregon and have been touring the US, Canada, Europe and Central America, Australia and New Zealand for the past 8 years.
They will be on their 2nd tour of Australia. This time they have bought a van and are staying for 3 months. They will be all up and down the East coast from Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and back up again. They are very excited to be returning to play new material written and inspired by their previous Oz adventure.

The Underscore Orkestra has taken many forms over the years and has traveled far and wide in many ways. Including vegetable oil powered tour bus, planes, trains, boats, autos, hitch hiking and their favourite way is by bicycle which they have done numerous times in Europe.

Their live shows are something to remember for years to come, they are fond of selling many wares, including Underscore Underwear, Uncle Jerry’s Magically Malicious Mustache Wax, CD’s, Neck Ties, Nude Calendars, Music boxes, and Stand up tub Basses.

“The band’s Eastern European sound is sort of a mix between Gypsy rock big guns DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello. They’ve got the very ethnic sound of the former, and though they play fast, it’s not at the manic punk level of the latter. The phrase ‘foot-stompin’ also is apt, as their original and traditional pieces have a way of making people move” – Reno Retro Mix
“You know a band is good when at the end of their sound check the audience starts clapping” – New Paltz Cultural Collective
“Best Local Album” – KBOO Radio “Amazing!!!” – VPR

With a driving banjo, doghouse bass, a sweet fiddle, Lime and Steel take a bluegrass string band, throw in a rock drum kit and a uniquely Australian intonation for a show of originals that moves from pub rock anthems about EH Holdens to convict murder ballads. Lime and Steel’s sweet harmonies twang through Bogan bluegrass love-songs and wind up into a spoon-tappin’ fast-pickin’ wine-soaked hillbilly family singalong.
