THE DOORS EXPERIENCE SHOW

Sat 28th December 2013
The DOORS Experience Show
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

THE DOORS EXPERIENCE is one of the most authentic tribute shows Australia has ever seen. This show will transport the hardest of critics back to the whisky in 1968. Singer Andy Sutton (UK Countdown/Dirty Deeds) is the ultimate JIM MORRISON as he struts his stuff with reckless abandonment. Vocally he has Morrison’s voice down to a tee with a close your eyes and its JIM affect.
Playing the part of Robbie Krueger Adam Watts (Rattle and Hum/Australian Made) recreates those classic Doors solo’s note for note. Our very own Ray Manzarek is played by Sean Phegan (Rattle and Hum/One Hit Wonders) you will lose yourself in those classic organ solo that are so authentic.
And driving this Ship from the rear is Sam Pagliaro (Rattle and Hum) on drums pumping out those classic bosanova beat keeps it all together from first song to last.
All this with the ambiance of a classic DOORS light show and stage props makes this a SHOW NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

LEAH FLANAGAN TRIO + GLENY RAE VIRUS & HER PLAYBOYS

Sat 7th Dec 2013
Leah Flanagan Trio plus Gleny Rae Virus and her Playboys
KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

Steam driven Hillbilly Swing and Indie, Roots, Multi-Instrumental Storytelling.

“Leah Flanagan writes beautiful songs and sings them in a voice you can sink into, cushiony comfort without a single rough edge – it makes you feel like you’ve come home.”
DEBORAH CONWAY

If you were to make a list of great Australian artists, the one constant is a tangible sense of restlessness, that idea of always being on the move creatively as much as physically. And it’s a tradition that is alive and well in Leah Flanagan. Over the past decade Leah’s pursuit of creating something truly special has not only taken her around the world, but across the genre map. From her strikingly simple and direct solo recordings, to her numerous festival appearances and performances with the world-renowned Indigenous performance group The Black Arm Band, the Darwin born artist has built a career on always looking ahead – taking that next creative leap to make something that inspires her as much as her audiences.

Darwin’s Leah Flanagan is a gifted songwriter with a warm voice and stage presence. She describes her music as combining elements of her heritage – ‘the story telling of Ireland, the passion of Italy and the love of country of Aboriginal Australia’.

Gleny Rae emerged from the Western Plains of NSW. Secondary education in Sydney and the subsequent discovery of FM radio opened up a thousand musical opportunities including several Associate diplomas on pianoforte and violin at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Gleny Rae followed her nomadic calling along the Highway of Roots Music. Troubadour status was achieved with the female country crossover duo, Toe Sucking Cowgirls, who tirelessly toured the recalcitrant corners of Australia, UK and Ireland, receiving TIARA award nominations, a variety of songwriting awards and national airplay. Armed with fiddle and squeezebox, Gleny Rae became a regular face at folk festivals, ute musters, outback events and a string of remote music-loving pubs.

In 2006, she formed specialist western swing band Gleny Rae Virus and her Tamworth Playboys with an aim to put the swing back in country music. The band’s first release Highrollin’ received national airplay and earned the band a top 5 finalist position in the Victorian Country Music Awards for Best Band.
The second full length release Beyond Horizontal sees the band stripped back to a trio featuring the delightful musicianship of Roy Payne (The Whiteliners, Don Walker) on guitar and lap steel, and Dougie Bull (The Lawnmowers, The Lairs) on double bass. The album toys with traditional forms of western swing, bluegrass, gypsy jazz and rockabilly, resulting in a collection of songs heavily influenced by the 40’s and 50’s Americana genres with a distinctly Australian narrative slant.

2011 also saw Gleny Rae Virus and her Tamworth Playboys accept an invitation to perform at the Americana Music Association Showcase in Nashville Tennessee.
The trio will return to the USA this October to continue their foray into the homelands of western swing and hillbilly music.

Dohnyale “Deni” Sharon Hines is an Australian R&B singer, and is the daughter of singer Marcia Hines.
Deni  received  her  education  in  the  entertainment  industry sitting to the side of stage watching Marcia belt out a string of Top 10 singles in the heady days of the 1970’s music scene.
Hines is an ARIA Award-winning singer who has sold 1.3 million records worldwide. She has had top ten hits in Australia, UK, France and Japan (actually #1 in Japan) and collaborated with superstars The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce Knowles and auteur Luc Beeson. For over two decades, the world has known the many moods of Deni Hines.

Growing up Hines began her career singing backup vocals for acts like Wa Wa Nee, Peter Blakely and Kylie Minogue.
She released her first single with the Australian band Rockmelons with the cover version of the Bill Withers 1971 hit “Ain’t No Sunshine”.
The song proved to be a success charting at number five on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. With the success of the first single, the reggae-inspired “That Word (L.O.V.E.)” was the second song released by the collaboration and became another top five single, charting at number four in Australia. The third and final song Hines released with the band was the ballad “It’s Not Over”.
Not long after this, Hines spent time performing on-stage with a production of Jesus Christ Superstar prior to pursuing a solo career.
In 1992, Hines recorded “Not Enough Time” with INXS.
Hines was then signed to Mushroom Records and went on to release solo material with the top ten single “It’s Alright” and the top twenty album Imagination which clocked in over 2.5 million copies in sales worldwide.
Her album Water for Chocolate released in 2006 features the singles “Water for Chocolate”, “Son of a Preacher Man” and “5 Days of Rain”.
In 2007 Hines collaborated with trumpeter James Morrison on an album of Jazz standards, The Other Woman. Hines and Morrison performed an Australian National Theatre tour to near sell out audiences and received an ARIA nomination for “Best Jazz Album”. They also performed at marquee festivals such as Christchurch Jazz Festival and the Darling Harbour Jazz Festival.
Recently she has dedicated much of her time to charitable work teaming up with Christine Anu with performances for the Oasis Foundation’s charity single “Takin’ it to the Streets” (a cover of the Doobie Brothers’ song) and the associated tour along with Lifeline and is proud to be the ambassador for the humanitarian charity Oasis Africa Australia. In 2010 she visited the foundation’s village and school in Kibera, Kenya and while there she commenced recording a world music style album featuring some of the local musicians and the kids choir from the Oasis Africa School.

Deni Hines is without doubt considered one of Australia’s foremost entertainers. From hit singles and albums, to lead roles in musicals & television, Deni has grown up in front of audiences from an enthusiastic young performer to a mature, sophisticated all round entertainer.

THE BARONS OF TANG
“Into the Mouths of Hungry Giants” ALBUM LAUNCH TOUR 2013
With Special Guest Ava Torch

KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

“No band in the land has made a greater impact in a shorter space of time than the manic Melbourne purveyors of ‘gypsy deathcore’.” ~ Tony Hillier, Rhythms Magazine

Gracing stages all over the world, this rag-tag bunch of misfits are slowly building an empire out of gaffa tape and bitumen. Mixing Klezmer and Balkan feels with punk, bent folk music and whatever is lying around the kitchen, these feisty troubadours are constantly striving to innovate. With an arsenal of instruments including bass clarinet, accordion, banjo and double bass, the band is redefining the limits of both “punk” and “world” music. They have toured relentlessly, and played alongside international artists includiing Gogol Bordello, Besh O Drom and The Pogues.

Based in Melbourne, The Barons of Tang have toured across the USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe, New Zealand, the UK, as well as playing a stack of shows back home in Australia, including Falls Festival, Peats Ridge, WOMADelaide, Woodford Folk Festival, Desert Festival (NT), The National Folk Festival and Byron Bay Bluesfest.

Launching their new album “Into the Mouths of Hungry Giants” across Australia, Sept/October 2013.

The Barons of Tang brilliantly combine traditional folk music into a modern context with a punk ethos. They exploded on to the RSL’s carpark pavilion stage at this year’s Blue Mountains Music Festival and also closed out the festival in our Blues Room. Don’t miss your chance to jump and sway away on our large dance floor when they come back to the Mountains for their album launch tour.

THE PIGS With Special Guests Chris Gillespie and The Time Being

Sat 31st August 2013 – THE PIGS
Supported by Chris Gillespie and The Time Being

KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

As seen on Spicks and Specks and Australia’s Got Talent!
The Pigs are comin’ to the mountains. With some Mount’n music!

The Pigs take a hit song, turn it upside down, shake the change out of its pockets and set it down in its original form… foot-stomping bluegrass.
Killing in the Name, Gold Digger, Like a Virgin… Few people know that these well-known songs are actually old-time classics, written by The Pigs.
Australia’s favourite bluegrass funsters The Pigs are known worldwide for their combination of super-catchy original tunes and foot-stomping ‘Piggified’ cover versions. Crashing through musical genres like a runaway tractor, the Pigs’ latest album, The Great Bluegrass Swindle marries superb musicianship with a distinctly Australian sense of humour – and hints at the uniquely bent energy of The Pigs’ exceedingly popular live shows.
For over 8 years now, The Pig Family has been stepping out onto the big festival stages around Australia, barefoot and bewildered. Meanwhile the band’s YouTube Channel has seen more than 400 000 hits, with their Single Ladies video becoming something of a sensation (also seen on ABC’s Spicks and Specks and Australia’s Got Talent). In 2013 The Pigs’ Great Bluegrass Swindle rolls on, with more Australian dates, followed by a return to Germany and Denmark.
A 5 or 6 piece ensemble, The Pig’s classic bluegrass instrumentation of banjo, acoustic guitars and double bass is driven by percussionist, Cousin Billy-Bob, on his stand-up drum-kit, making a supercharged Hillbilly sound. Sometimes extended family members contribute fiddle, mandolin and dobro to the mix.
As well as the mega-hit songs that The Pigs claim to have written, the Pigs have a swag of cracking original tunes that they have actually written. Macho Moisturiser, the tale of a big country boy who wrestles crocodiles, but maintains a strict skin care regime, is a favourite with Pigs fans at The Gympie Muster. Hey Christina, the second single off their latest album, Horses, is a wickedly funny breakup song. The Pigs performed Hey Christina live on Richard Glover’s Thank God It’s Friday (ABC 702) in October 2010. “I wrote Hey Christina for a girl who dumped me, then married another guy two weeks later. I guess the song is my way of hoping that life isn’t going perfectly for the newlyweds. I wouldn’t mind it, for example, if the telephone started to ring every time they were making love.” – Stretch Pig on writing Hey Christina.
The Pigs’ radio singles, Crazy, Single Ladies and Hey Christina, have been on high rotation on several country music radio stations around Australia. The music video to Crazy was nominated for a Golden Guitar award at the Tamworth Country Music Awards in 2008. The band regularly pops up on ABC local radio stations and their songs have also featured on youth and indie radio stations like Triple J, 4ZZZFM (Brisbane), Triple R 102.7 (Melbourne) and FBI 94.5 (Sydney). The Pigs’ natural habitat is the music festival, having wowed audiences at Woodford Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Skagen Folk Festival (Denmark), The Deniliquin Ute Muster and The Gympie Muster. As well, the boys have played sell-out shows each year at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Highly entertaining – guaranteed to get your feet stomping and your faces smiling.
Come and enjoy ‘The Pigs’ for one night only at Katoomba RSL Club.

Chris Gillespie is an independent artist from the Blue Mountains of NSW. His songs are beautiful, bursting with observational yearning. “A fingerpickin’, harmonica playing troubadour…
‘Sydney’s answer to Bob Dylan” (Dave Regos – FBi Radio). Gillespie is renowned by his audience and peers for his songwriting craft, especially his lyrics – “Chris Gillespie is definitely one of those timeless songsmiths” – Joe Gould, (The Crooked Fiddle Band).
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Gillespie has teamed up with Nicholas Mueller and Miriam Jones (from The Lurkers) to form an exciting and fresh new act dubbed ‘The Time Being’.
The trio were brought together by jamming at a festival in early 2013 (and also by their shared admiration of the Paul Kelly bluegrass albums).
Nick and Mim give Gillespie’s songs a different spin weaving new rhythms and textures. So for the time being you can expect beautiful instrumentation coupled with meaningful and thought provoking words and “…harmonies [that] are downright gorgeous” (Tom Ballard Triple J).
The music is very Australian, highly original and delivered with refreshing honesty and integrity.
Chris Gillespie enjoyed a very busy and abundantly successful 2012 with the release of his debut album ‘Unnatural Light’. The title track spent months in the top 20 of the Triple J Unearthed charts. The song was used as the soundtrack to a short film, which was aired on Channel 9. Chris also performed live on Foxtel and was the opening act for Triple J favourite and Australian Idol finalist Lisa Mitchell.
“It’s difficult for any independent acoustic artist to make a name for themselves in the shadow of the likes of Josh Pyke and John Butler. Yet somehow Chris Gillespie pulls this off with an earthy, unadorned and folksy panache… [He] creates an intoxicatingly addictive blend of country-infused folk rock that is at once familiar and unique” (Peter Walsh Rave Magazine, Brisbane).

BRITISH INDIA ‘Controller’ Album Tour With Special Guests Sons of Mercury + The Trobes

Sat 11th May 2013 – BRITISH INDIA
‘Controller’ Album Tour
Special Guests Sons of Mercury + The Trobes

KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

British India are a garage rock band from Melbourne Australia. Formed in high school the band comprises of vocalist, guitarist Declan Melia, guitarist Nic Wilson, bassist Will Drummond and drummer Matt O’Gorman.

They have released three studio albums. ‘Guillotine’ 2007 winner of the ‘AIR’ best independent award’ ‘Thieves’ 2008 ‘Aria Top 5 debut and ARIA nominated ‘Best Independent album’ and their 3rd album ‘Avalanche’ 2010 ARIA Top 10 debut.

In 2012 British India signed a recording and publishing deal with Mushroom Music and Liberation Records in Melbourne. They have recently finished their 4th album ‘Controller’ released in March 2013 which sees them embarking on another national tour.

Their angst driven guitar pop has proved to be a winner in Australia and the band have earned their place as the indie darlings of Australia’s underground music scene.

British India’s live show is explosive and a force to be reckoned with, they have become one of Australia’s most popular live bands. They have played over 500 shows and have smashed their way through several sell-out tours and festivals like Big Day Out, Falls, Pyramid Rock, Southbound, Homebake and Splendour In The Grass to name a few.

British India emerged from the fertile underbelly of Melbourne’s independent music scene to take Australia by storm in July 2007 with their acclaimed debut album Guillotine. Their songs ‘Black & White Radio’, ‘Tie Up My hands’, ‘Run The Red Light’ and ‘Russian Roulette’ became arm-raising, air-punching anthems at venues and festivals across the country. They took out the 2007 AIR Award for Best New Independent Artist.

Exactly one year later in July 2008 British India released their second album Thieves. Thieves debut at No 5 in the ARIA Top 10 and demonstrated the band’s growth, in both popularity and as songwriters ‘Thieves’ featured the foot-stomping singles ‘I Said I’m Sorry,’ ‘This Dance Is Loaded,’ ‘You Will Die And I Will Take Over’ and ‘God Is Dead (Meet The Kids)’, this earned the boys their first ARIA Award nomination.

Their 3rd album ‘Avalanche’ released on May 2010 cemented their position as Australia’s hottest young independent band and scored the boys their 2nd Top 10 debut in 18 months, featuring one of the band’s most popular tracks to date ‘Vanilla’. Jam packed with brilliant pop melodies, high-octane rock & roll, and the lyrical genius of singer Declan Melia; Avalanche takes the garage pop which has characterized British India’s initial success to new heights.

‘Vanilla’ released exclusively to triple j became the station’s most popular download in November and gave the boys their 3rd entry in triple J Hottest 100.‘

Launching their latest album through the band’s new label, Liberation. British India return to the live scene with their much anticipated fourth LP ‘Controller’ which features the recently released new single ‘Summer Forgive Me’ as well as last year’s popular single ‘I Can Make You Love Me’, which came in at number 41 on triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2012.Controller sees British India at the height of their powers.
The album is loaded with potent drum beats and layered, exhilarating guitars, hip-shaking melodies and a lyrical genius from lead singer Declan Melia that is too often lacking in rock albums.
It is apparent on Controller that the band have captured all of the attitude, poise and swagger that made their past three offerings so successful. These 10 album tracks see British India re-invigorated, in their finest and most assured form to date.

“British India have done well to incorporate some new found musical diversity whilst at the same time satisfying all fans by staying true to the genres that got them their initial break.” – Ashley Burian: Adam Not Eve.

Live, the band are something else, their shows are a fiery, in-your-face display of first-rate musicianship, guaranteed to get you moving.

THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND With Special Guests THE WONDERFUL LIVES

Sat 6th April 2013
THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND
+ Special Guests THE WONDERFUL LIVES

KATOOMBA RSL CLUB
86 Lurline St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia

Hot from Falls Festival and the main stage at Peats Ridge, and having just returned from recording their new album in Chicago with Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, Joanna Newsom), The Crooked Fiddle Band are set to again storm the Katoomba RSL.
This mesmerising and fiery acoustic 4-piece delivers high-energy future-folk. Celtic energy. Swamp-stomping hoedown. Dance-inciting mayhem. Hardcore gypsy passion!
Following a mammoth tour of European festivals and UK Olympics mayhem, The Crooked Fiddle Band return to our shores with new tunes written besides fjords and lakes in Finland and Norway. The wild setting gives the band’s already ecstatic and twisted high-energy tunes an expansive cinematic edge. From whirling dances to intense battle-scene climaxes, this Sydney-based acoustic four-piece (violin, double-bass, drums and guitar/bouzouki) spurs the dance floor into a post-apocalyptic hoe down.

Driven by the beautiful and furious fiddling of Jess Randall, and underpinned by a rhythm section featuring Gordon Wallace (bouzouki, guitar, banjo, mandolin), Mark Stevens (double bass, Appalachian dulcimer, charango) and Joe Gould (drum kit, hand percussion, garbage bin, vocals) the Crooked Fiddle Band sound blasts, rocks and grooves to the point of dementia, compelling listeners into a joyous frenzy.

Their music has been described by Brian Eno as “…completely surprising: the music is original and quixotic. I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything else like it!”
“This band really is a national treasure and testament to the infinite talent that keeps manifesting in our backyard… this group have re-invented folk music as it is known… The Crooked Fiddle Band charmed the audience into submission.” – Vanessa Lahey, Australian Stage
“When The Crooked Fiddle Band took to the stage, it was as though someone had put 10,000 volts through the dance floor.” : BEAT magazine.

Supported by The Wonderful Lives

“Piano, cello, pedal steel guitar, bass and drums collide in an epic storm of folk-shanties, grimy rock dirges and bittersweet dark country tales.”

The Wonderful Lives were born in Sydney mid 2008 and are a mix of Blue Mountains locals and city dwelling folk.
Their debut album, ‘The Human Heart Will Take Your Life’ perfectly captures their alternative folk rock sound and unusual instrument combination. A collection of unique compositions, varying in style, emotion and intensity, take the listener on a ride from love to hate, life to death and heaven to hell.
The band has previously enjoyed a great response from Blue Mountains crowds following a successful support slot with Tex Perkins & The Band of Gold and a set at the 2012 Winter Magic Festival. They have performed their blistering brand of alternative folk across metropolitan Sydney and regional areas, taking in iconic live music venues such as The Gaelic Club in Surry Hills, the Annandale Hotel, and the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown.
Songs from the band’s catalogue have been selected for rotation on the playlists of Sydney’s FBi radio (94.5FM), 2SER’s ‘Sideways through Sound’ show (107.3FM), Blu FM (89.1 FM) and have also featured in Triple J’s Unearthed showcase.

Koman has returned to Australia after a long acting stint in Europe, as has guitarist Nara Demassonn, who has been touring the world with sold-out circus show, Cantina.Together with a gang of Australia’s most illustrious ex-cons drawn from The Blue Grassy Knoll, Zulya and the Children of the Underground, Croque Monsieur, Bombay Royale, and The Puta Madre Brothers, this is an extraordinary collective.

VulgarGrad play music by, for, and about Russian thieves: raucous drunken songs, inebriated waltzes, manic stomps and hot swing from the Cold War days. Be prepared for a night of gun-slinging, vodka-swilling, foul-mouthed disorder, and watch out for the biggest, most triangular instrument you will ever see, the contrabass balalaika.
