Emily Adele Williams is a cello player and improviser performing on amplified/effected cello using various effect pedals, cello percussion, and sampled sounds to multi layer her music which can be described as ambient, drone-like with atmospheric soundscapes. Emily has collaborated on a number of musical projects over her career and and has a solo cello project ‘Night Diver‘ and duo ‘Au Revoir Hands‘ with composer and buchla musician Anthony Lyons.

Night Diver is Emily’s solo music project. Her main instrument remains at the centre, augmented by sounds of sampled glass, steel & kinetic toys pitched & percussive.
The multiple layers of cello and shimmering electronics are slowly interwoven evoking anticipation, longing & stillness.
The music is emotionally charged with revolving arpeggios which drift around a motif of atmospheric, low end drone-like ambience, disquieting moody melodies & airy experimental minimalism.

“Emily Adele Williams is an Australian cello player and improviser. The music blends broad musical styles from modern classical, post minimalist, electronic and experimental avant pop mixing influences from contemporary music creating a wide spectrum of sounds from her instrument from intimate simplicity to atmospheric soundscapes and making full use of technology using her laptop and effected amplified Cello. Her compositions reveal a passion and a deep understanding of classical music rules and most importantly a willingness to subvert them to create lush and breathtaking musical landscapes” – The Age

“Cellist Emily Williams, an innovative and genre-defying solo instrumentalist in her own right.” – Beat Magazine

A yodellin´, thigh slappin’, lederhosen wettin´ fest of German music from The Beez’ Deta (accordion, vocals) and Rob (guitar, vocals) featuring the Beatific Beats of Julia Day on drums.

You’ll thrill to comic classics from the likes of Rammstein and Kraftwerk; you’ll tear off that dirndl and shake a Teutonic Tailfeather when you catch a glimpse of Nena´s 99 Red Balloons; you’ll swoon to Marlene Dietrich´s Lili Marlene, but wait, that´s not all!

Now those Testy Teutons have their sights set on the rich treasury of Oz Rock. As polka. In German. Wince as Aussie classics are put through the Sauerkraut mincer! Cover your ears as the likes of Barnsey and Farnsy are blitzed into polka oblivion! In The Sauerkrauts own words- “If you´re not a polka fan it’s looking really bad, ´cause this might be the longest evening you have ever had”. The Last Plane Out of Sydney´s almost gone but, regrettably, The Sauerkrauts are not on board.

Deta and Rob always felt that the German Oeuvre was a little under represented in today´s musical landscape, so here they are to make amends with an evening of dance floor-compatible Deutsche Derring-do, featuring Deta´s fabulous “Brunhilde Bass“ accordion. One octave below the conventional accordion bass, this is an Alp-quaking tone of Wagnerian proportions. Melded with Rob´s custom Höfner “Blitzkrieg“ guitar and Julia Day´s Germanic Grooves it´s an irresistible rockin’ polka machine.

Deta and Rob both hail from Berlin; their band The Beez performs regularly throughout Europe and Australia. They´ve appeared on ABC TV´s Spicks and Specks and every folk festival you care to think of.

Recent ARIA nominees – THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND are a mesmerising and fiery acoustic 4-piece that deliver high-energy Chainsaw Future-Folk. Post-Apocalyptic World Music. Celtic Energy. Swamp-Stomping Hoe down. Dance-Inciting Mayhem. Hardcore Gypsy Passion!

The Crooked Fiddle Band formed in 2006 through their mutual love of the energy and intensity of various traditional world music. Whilst writing and arranging, they discovered that this energy was shared by the other music they love: there seems to be a common thread between the frenetic accompaniment of gypsy, klezmer and punk rock; between the twisting rhythms of math-metal and Balkan folk; between the clear tonalities of Scandinavian folk, Celtic folk, and cinematic post rock.
All these influences went into the mix, but what came out was The Crooked Fiddle Band. The sound they love is dark and often driving, but also writhing and ecstatic They have jumped around with whirling crowds at festivals, bars and dirty warehouse parties throughout Europe and Australia and also played their more cinematic sounds in the Opera Theatre of the Sydney Opera House.
This music they have sometimes called ‘chainsaw folk’ – even though they are pro-conservation – but others have called it “14th century Romanian metal”, “thrash folk”, “whirlwind gypsy” and even “what Sepultura would sound like if they provided the soundtrack to a hyperactive version of O Brother Where Art Thou.” So whilst the search continues for a name for their genre, they are mainly concerned with making music with melody, energy and intensity.

Driven by the beautiful and furious fiddling of Jess Randall (also on Lennart Lovdin Nyckelharpa), and underpinned by a rhythm section featuring Gordon Wallace (Gilet guitar, a Wheeler Custom Lutherie guizouki and a Fylde mandolin and cittern), Mark Stevens (double bass, Appalachian dulcimer, charango) and Joe Gould (drum kit, hand percussion, garbage bin, vocals) the Crooked Fiddle Band sound blasts, rocks and grooves to the point of dementia, compelling listeners into a joyous frenzy.

Their latest offering ‘Another Subtle Atom Bomb’ takes the band’s blistering violin-led live show and creates soundtracks to their feelings around climate change. From angsty and furious folk tunes to fantastical imagined worlds full of ecstatic hope, this is The Crooked Fiddle Band’s most personal album yet.

Their music has been described by Brian Eno as “…completely surprising: the music is original and quixotic. I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything else like it!”

“This band really is a national treasure and testament to the infinite talent that keeps manifesting in our backyard… this group have re-invented folk music as it is known… The Crooked Fiddle Band charmed the audience into submission.” – Vanessa Lahey, Australian Stage

“When The Crooked Fiddle Band took to the stage, it was as though someone had put 10,000 volts through the dance floor.” – BEAT magazine.

“AN IRRESISTIBLE FORCE OF NATURE.” – Tony Hillier, The Australian

DeepseaLights_03WEB300

Blue Mountains based Deepsea Lights have spent most of their time playing gigs in and around Sydney, taking their time to craft a unique sound and engaging stage presence. Sometimes playing more traditional venues, often playing underground artist run events, their versatile set means they’re at home on most line-ups.

Captivating vocals, catchy melodies, live looping, spoken word; Deepsea Lights put a lot of focus on pulling a crowd in, and creating and holding a space. In 2019 the duo released their first full length album “The Space Between”.
Not content living in just one genre, the duo dip their toes (and sometimes plunge their heads) into anything that inspires them. Lying somewhere between folk and trip-hop, their uncommon sound can move from rolling bass lines and ethereal vocal melodies, to beats composed entirely of household objects being struck with other household objects, to aggressive hip-hop rants, to soft rainy-day folk songs. Stitching their inspirations together like a sonic patchwork quilt, they’ll use whatever they can get their hands on in an effort to get things out of their heads and into the world.

Lolo Lovina (‘Red Beer’) are an intoxicating, cosmopolitan virtuosic brew infused with Unza, Swing and Balkan Gypsy beats. The only ethnic Romani band in Australia, fronted by Hungarian Romani-Gypsy singer Sarah Bedak.
Lolo Lovina’s music reflects the cosmopolitan identity of an artist, who grew up with three native tongues and cultures. The charming and passionate performance of the charismatic singer makes each of her concerts a unique experience. Featuring Serbian Rroma drummer Nenad RadicMatt Ottignon on Sax, Leonid Beshlei on button accordion and sax & George Nikolopolous on bass.
Lolo Lovina have played at the Opera House, Guca Festival Serbia, in New Caledonia, in Europe and to full houses wherever they go.
Their album Rroma Sapien received a 4 Star review in the London based World Music magazine Song Lines (June 2016) with Rroma Sapien and RromAntics both being featured on ABC Radio National’s program, ‘The Daily Planet’.

(Lolo Lovina)…have created an album that swings from traditional to ground breaking Rroma music, all imbued with a tremendous sense of fun” – Lucky Oceans, The Daily Planet ABC Radio National

‘Excellent new, vibrant album (RromAntics!) from world-touring, Sydney-based Rrom music band…’ – Lucky Oceans, The Daily Planet, ABC Radio National
“You have to listen to these people, this is the future of music” – Brian Eno, Luminous Festival, Sydney Opera House
“With musicians from Ukrainian/Romanian, Hungarian and Brazillian backgrounds, this music is authentic to its roots and played with vigour and precision.” – Bradfield Dumpleton
“Musically and culturally Planet/MGM consider the group to be in the forefront of contemporary world music coming out of Australia. Their live performances are exciting, varied and professional with consummate performance skills from all members.” – Graeme Regan, MGM the Planet Company
“…Traditional Gypsy tunes alternate with Lolo originals here, and the arrangements are solid, tight, classy and brassy…” – 4 STAR review of Rroma Sapien by Seth Jordan in Songlines Magazine, London UK.
“..a most remarkable band fronted by …Sarah Bedak – as exotic a flower as you are ever likely to see behind a microphone. To say the sound is infectious doesn’t quite express it…they have people of all ages (and believe me, I saw it) hurling themselves through the air, across the dance floor, inventing moves on the spot, hugging each other with a passion … I’ve seen bands of all shade play, but I can’t recall seeing anything quite like this! Yes, it is gypsy but there are also dollops of Spanish flamenco, Russian, Greek – indeed the music of anyone who likes to party.” – Glenn A Baker

GaryDaleyJamesGreening300

Highly respected musicians, James Greening, trombone and pocket trumpet & Gary Daley, pianist and accordionist, have joined forces to bring an amalgam of original compositions, classical, jazz and improv.
After decades as sought after sidemen in projects like ‘The Catholics’, as well as leading their own projects, these two renowned musicians have discovered a deep joy in making music together. Both Daley and Greening relish the freedom, intimacy and transparency of the duo which is perhaps one of the most exposed types of performance.
Their musical dialogue is about unmasking, connection and freedom. Audiences respond with great enthusiasm to their performances.

Greening’s performing and recording credits put him in the company of some Australia’s all-time greatest contemporary musicians. “Greening’s trombone has the delicious plumpness of a ripe mango. The Sad bits and the funny bits become jumbled, and there can be no higher praise.” – John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald.

Daley’s playing has been described as “exquisite”, by John Shand (SMH), and his composition for large ensemble, Sanctuary, drew the following response… “music such as this can knock the wind out of my diaphragm, by simply reminding me how far the word falls short of the music”, – John Hardaker, Australianjazz.net

POSTPONED – THE BUTTON COLLECTIVE Unplugged Album Launch Tour + Special Guest TBA at Junction 142 Katoomba, Blue Mountains – SAT 27th June 2020

Hello everyone, this event is still postponed as the online information indicates.

Restrictions on national touring as well as limited venue capacities due to social distancing requirements have meant that confirming the new date hasn’t been possible as yet.

Unfortunately as long as social distancing remains in place this particular venue can only accommodate 36 people in total including all performers and staff. So not enough guests in the end to make putting on a concert with touring performers viable at this stage (and keeping ticket prices accessible for customers).

I have moved the online promotion to a new temporary date for now but will announce the set date as soon as we are able to confirm.

If you have any further questions then please contact us directly:

Kind Regards
Charity

Fusion Boutique Presents
THE BUTTON COLLECTIVE UnButtoned (acoustic unplugged) concert
‘Make a Dead Man Sing’ Album Launch Tour
+ Special Guest TBA
live in Concert at Junction 142 Katoomba, Blue Mountains

Announcement: In light of the current situation surrounding COVID-19 this event will need to be postponed.
We are also in the process of working with the artists and venue on a rescheduled date and will advise of that as soon as available.

Saturday 27th June 2020, 8:30pm. Doors Open 7:30pm.

Listen to The Button Collective’s latest album release ‘Make a Dead Man Sing’ and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d slipped through the fabric into Australia’s colonial heyday. The album, recorded live on tape in front of a few small audiences, combines classic tales of Australia’s onerous past with personal stories from songwriter Brodie Buttons.

The Button Collective bring back to life an essence of Australia that has been largely drowned out by the hum of progress and development in this parched country. Brodie Buttons brings with his songwriting an air of wisdom well beyond his years. With an earnest yet jovial presence, he shares an intimacy and perspective that engages both young and old, and leaves audiences with that timeless kind of yearning for the simplicity of yesteryear.

As well as original folk songs, the five piece band perform their own fiery versions of traditional Irish, Australian, and old time American tunes passed down through generations. The performances range from heartfelt finger-picking to full-blown high energy party-folk perfect for a hoedown. In fact, their live performance is rumoured to actually Make a Dead Man Sing.

Fusion Boutique is extremely pleased to present THE TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD ORCHESTRA (Canada) in the Blue Mountains for their first Australian Tour. This trip sees them perform at Illawara and Cygnet Folk Festivals and other select dates.

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are a collection of musicians, linked by common sonic journeys and familial ties. From ballads and sing-alongs to high-energy dance parties, they have spent years telling their stories with guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, with melodies and music makers gleaned from their wanderings. The band is from a sparsely populated region of Canada’s West Coast. They travel community to community, bringing people together at halls on the Gulf Islands, barns in the prairies, kitchen parties in towns, clubs in the cities and festivals all summer long.

Their music weaves a multicultural Canadian tapestry: Roots, Eastern European Dance Party, Jazz, Bluegrass, Flamenco, African, Latin, Celtic, Métis, Rock, Gospel, Blues, Canadiana while the band represents an eclectic background – German Mennonite, Chinese, Dutch, Scottish and Métis. These troubadours remind you that this music could not exist without warm bodies in search of harmony.

The Crooked Fiddle Band return to Katoomba to launch their brand new album!

Another Subtle Atom Bomb takes the band’s blistering violin-led live show and creates soundtracks to their feelings around climate change.
From angsty and furious folk tunes to fantastical imagined worlds full of ecstatic hope, this is The Crooked Fiddle Band’s most personal album yet.
The band’s last show before an 18 month recording break was in Katoomba, so they can’t wait to return for a wild night to show you what they’ve been cooking up!

The mesmerising and fiery acoustic 4-piece that is THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND deliver high-energy Chainsaw Future-Folk.

The sound they love is dark and often driving, but also writhing and ecstatic. They have jumped around with whirling crowds at festivals, bars and dirty warehouse parties throughout Europe and Australia and also played their more cinematic sounds in the Opera Theatre of the Sydney Opera House.
From whirling dances to intense battle-scene climaxes, this four-piece spurs the dance floor into a post-apocalyptic hoe down.

Burralow-Band-Shot-LRG300

+ Special Guests BURRALOW

Burralow is an indie folk outfit fronted by the song writing duo, Sarah Heydon and Ryan Sheridan. Together these two hopeless-romantic songwriters have penned and orchestrated a collection of stories from life on the road and living in the Blue Mountains.
With a sound inspired from artists such as Cat Power to The Beatles, their shows are dotted with instrument changes and striking melodies.
Sarah sings and performs from behind a stripped-down drum kit and glockenspiel combination, while Ryan sings and wrangles a guitar. The band’s timbre teeters between acoustic and electric with Alex Sherdan fretting double and electric basses, Andrew Provan duelling between guitar and mandolin, and Maizy Coombes striking the fiddle.

VULGARGRAD (Melbourne) + Special Guests Raduga Trio at the Baroque Room, Katoomba Blue Mountains, FRI 5th April 2019

Nomadic Fish & Fusion Boutique Present
VULGARGRAD (Melbourne)
+ Special Guests Raduga Trio (Blue Mtns)
Live in concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

Fri 5th April 2019
Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 86 Bathurst Rd (Upstairs from ‘The Harp & Fiddle’ Irish Bar)
– NEW ENTRY VIA THE CARRINGTON HOTEL DRIVEWAY –
Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.

Everybody’s favourite Russian criminals make their long-awaited return to Australian stages, launching their much-anticipated new album, “The Odessa Job”. The band has amassed an incredibly dedicated fan-base over the last 14 years, but for those who don’t know, VulgarGrad are a seven-piece band that play music by, for, and about Russian criminals – raw, raucous, and rude (particularly if you understand Russian).

VulgarGrad frontman and infamous Polish ne’er-do-well, Jacek Koman, is the rough diamond of stage and screen, known for his vocals on Roxanne from Baz Lurhmann’s Moulin Rouge and seen in The Great Gatsby.
He has just been released from penal servitude in the chilly film and TV studios of Warsaw, but only on a temporary basis. VulgarGrad are only likely to have a handful of Australian shows in 2019, so make sure you catch them before they get away.

After a tantalisingly lengthy wait (ten years!), the band now has a new album:  “The Odessa Job”, launching this April at the recently refurbished Baroque Room in Katoomba (Friday 5th April), and Camelot Lounge in Marrickville (Saturday 6th April) + Django bar (Sunday 7th April 2019).

The first single from the new album “I Remember”  (“Помню я”) is a psychedelic Soviet prison ode to the memory of dear mama, who always warned us not to hang out with thieves.

Be prepared for a night of gun-slinging, vodka-swilling, foul-mouthed disorder, and watch out for the biggest, most triangular instrument you will ever see, the contrabass balalaika.
Experience drunken songs, inebriated waltzes, manic stomps, hot swing from the Cold War days along with punk classics of the Perestroika era.
Wear a striped top and learn to swear in Russian, and you will dance or the trumpeter will shoot you.

ON THE STOOP + Special Guests THE LOST MARIACHIS at the Baroque Room RELAUNCH, Katoomba Blue Mountains, SAT 29th September 2018

ON THE STOOP LIVE IN CONCERT
+ Special Guests THE LOST MARIACHIS
Live in concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel
RELAUNCH NIGHT following recent refurbishments!

Sat 29th September 2018
Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 86 Bathurst Rd (Upstairs from ‘The Harp & Fiddle’ Irish Bar)
– NEW ENTRY VIA THE CARRINGTON HOTEL DRIVEWAY –
Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.

On The Stoop don’t plan on sticking to the rules. Or expectations. Or the straight path.
Balkan Gypsy, Mariachi, New-Orleans Swing, Hot Jazz, Spaghetti-Western, Cabaret, Film Score, Cumbia, Ska, Punk-Rock and Funk and few other as yet unidentified genres are all represented in this magnificent ensemble. On The Stoop are making a mark with their own style of refreshingly unpredictable music.

On the Stoop are formed by an outstanding group of players who each bring their personal spark to the band. They share members with bands including Waiting For Guinness, Mikelangelo, The Rhythm Hunters, Watussi, Fat Yahoozah, Facemeat, Chronology Arts Ensemble and a host of others.

Recent times have been generous to the band with a bunch of festivals under their belt, some regional touring capped off with performing at the Sydney Opera House.
Their latest LP, ‘Home’, received extensive radio support in Sydney including album of the week on Eastside Radio and airplay on community radio stations 2SER, FBi, ABC Radio National and RRR in Melbourne.

“My new favourite Zappa-flavoured, Spaghetti Western, gypsy-eyed, banjo powered, 1920’s/2040’s, Newtown, Balkan band” – John Hardaker, Words About Music

“I described their self-titled 2016 debut album as “Eastern-European, Tango, Balkan, Spaghetti Western, Gypsy, Vaudeville, Theatre, Blues, Zappa meets Trad Jazz’ and I was not kidding! On listening to their second album Home, I now have to add Mariachi, New-Orleans Swing, Cabaret, Film Score, Mexican Cumbia and Punk Rock. This is ludicrous I hear you proclaim. Well so is On the Stoop and I love them for it. Mariachi and Cumbia feature big time but not in their traditional forms.
On The Stoop bend and break the rules like no other Australian pop group and they do it in great style and with raucous abandon!

One moment they can summon up Frank Zappa in his zaniest moments and then next moment we’re in New Orleans with a second line street jazz band and then off to Mexico with a modern mariachi band. But these wildly varied flights of fancy are always framed in excellent musicianship in the composition, the arrangements and the playing. The horn harmonies are smooth and slick at times and weird and atonal when the song is begging for bent.

Only a group of highly accomplished musicians could keep up with the mercurial Serge Stanley who leads the band on a very wild ride. Dirk Kruithof contributes guitar lines that are sometimes pure spaghetti western and at other times have the angular attack of a musical chain saw. The rhythm section of Tim Bradley on drums and Joe Manton on bass is completely capable of all the myriad grooves that Stanley’s imagination demands. All the horn players are exceptionally good, playing in tight formation at times and in crazed cacophony at others.” – Peter Winkler, Loud Mouth

“This could be eight different bands from eight different corners of the world except it’s more like one fevered collective musical brain firing off ideas like skyrockets. Look, there’s one exploding above you right now” – Bernard Zuel, Music Journalist

On The Stoop come to the Blue Mountains fresh from playing a bunch of regional shows including filling halls in the mid North Coast and electrifying the dance floor at local festivals.

They are excited to be bringing their energetic mix of genres for a super fun night in the newly refurbished Baroque Room with two sets guaranteed to give the new sound system a great work out!

THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND & SONORI at Hotel Gearin, Katoomba Blue Mountains, SAT 16th December 2017

THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND + SONORI
in concert at Hotel Gearin

Sat 16th December 2017
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN, 273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

Put on your dancing shoes and don’t miss your chance to enjoy this unique musical experience!

THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND return to the Blue Mountains to showcase some of their new material ahead of recording for their next album.
They will be joined on the night by Blue Mountains locals SONORI for their highly anticipated Mountains EP launch.

The mesmerising and fiery acoustic 4-piece that is THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND deliver high-energy Chainsaw Future-Folk.

Driven by the beautiful and furious fiddling of Jess Randall (also on Lennart Lovdin Nyckelharpa), and underpinned by a rhythm section featuring Gordon Wallace (Gilet guitar, a Wheeler Customer Lutherie guizouki and a Fylde mandolin and cittern), Mark Stevens (double bass, Appalachian dulcimer, charango) and Joe Gould (drum kit, hand percussion, garbage bin, vocals) the Crooked Fiddle Band sound blasts, rocks and grooves to the point of dementia, compelling listeners into a joyous frenzy.

SONORI-2017_300web

Formed in the music and art rich community of Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains of NSW, SONORI was the result of the unlikely convergence of an effects loving classically trained cellist, a post rock guru and an electronics junkie. Word of this intriguing and unusual combination lead to a gig booking before they had even played a single note together. Beginning life as an instrumental three piece made up of looped cellos, guitars/keys and drum machines, they were then joined by an eclectically influenced singer taking their original compositions to a whole other level with an extensive set of lyrical themes and versatile singing techniques.
They quickly discovered that their individual skills and complimentary differences blended with their shared passions and friendly natures, resulting in a musical style which fulfilled the promise of something special and unique.

Rich with thick layers of sound, pulsing beats and soaring and shadowy vocals, they have been described as “Cinematic orchestral experimental journey music. Post rock you can dance to”.

Appealing to both the outgoing dancers and the inward thinkers alike, they immediately captured people’s attention and the buzz that was created on the local scene following their first few shows confirmed that they were onto something.
As their sound continued to develop through a string of hometown appearances, the band commenced work on their debut EP, further solidifying the bond between the members as they all worked closely together on the writing, composition, arrangement, recording and mixing.

With a front page feature in local street press ‘The Haze Mag’, and multiple appearances on community radio, local support continued to grow as they appeared on stage alongside acts as varied as Sydney post rock giants We Lost the Sea, and Melbourne beats oriented world music titans Tijuana Cartel.
A trip to Psyfari festival in 2016 saw them playing a technicolour ‪Saturday night‬ set with a great response from the happy Psyfarians.

More recently the band spent two nights performing on the steps of Katoomba’s iconic Carrington Hotel as part of the ‘Culturescape’ festival event, where their music provided a live soundtrack to the works of local artists projected across the face of the building as the band played.

This romantic origin story is represented beautifully on their debut self titled EP, which is due for release in December‪.‬ The recording serves as both an introduction to the band and a promise of much more to come.

Line up:
Lulu Levins-Skehill – Vocals, Bass
Andre Matkovic – Guitar, Keys
Tim Mahony – Cello
Jasper Russell – 303, 808, 909, TRON, other drum machines, electronics & lights

PETER ROWAN Bluegrass Band featuring Chris Henry (USA) – 2016 Australian Tour at Hotel Gearin, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Sat 2nd April 2016

Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band featuring Chris Henry (USA)
2016 Australian Tour
+ Special Guests Mike, Tinker & Ged

Sat 2nd April 2016
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN, 273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

Legendary US Bluegrass singer-songwriter and Grammy award winner, Peter Rowan, “the voice of Bluegrass”, returns to Australia with his Bluegrass Band, featuring Chris Henry on mandolin, Patrick Sauber on banjo, and Paul Knight on double bass.

Chris Henry is one of the most highly regarded young musicians on the American Bluegrass scene today, “the premier Monroe-style mandolinist of his generation”, while Patrick Sauber has recorded or performed with many artists, including Doc Watson, Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, John Fogerty, Richard Greene and Laurie Lewis, and was the banjo-player in the movie, ‘A Mighty Wind’. Paul Knight has been playing with Peter Rowan in various configurations for about 20 years. His driving acoustic bass has been part of recordings and live performances with the likes of Jim Lauderdale and Laurie Lewis, as well as being integral to the sound of the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band.

Peter Rowan is a true legend of American Bluegrass, with a history dating from 1964 and his role as lead-singer/guitarist with the father of Bluegrass, the late Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys. Rowan then went on to form the revolutionary Folk/Rock band, Seatrain, which recorded two albums in the UK, produced by Beatles producer, George Martin. He left Seatrain to team up with David Grisman, Richard Greene, Bill Keith, & Clarence White (from The Byrds) in bluegrass supergroup, Muleskinner. He and Grisman moved on to form Old & In The Way with Jerry Garcia and Vassar Clements. Since then Rowan has released numerous albums of mostly original songs, is a Grammy Award winner and six-time Grammy nominee, and has performed and recorded with the likes of Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Gillian Welch, Tim O’Brien, Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Del McCoury, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Flaco Jimenez, and Peter Tosh.

Today at the age of 73, he is still touring constantly, writing new songs, making new recordings, including the highly-acclaimed 2013 release on Compass Records, ‘The Old School’, featuring 10 new original songs, and two more recent albums, “Dharma Blues” and “Peter Rowan’s Twang An’ Groove Vol 1”.

Rowan has demonstrated himself to be an artist of unusual depth and imagination, experimenting with other influences, while never losing track of the deep roots and musical purity that are integral to his presence. He is a singer and songwriter without equal, a multi-instrumentalist and accomplished guitarist. His beautiful singing is of the classic “high-lonesome”, borrowed by Monroe from the Appalachian ballad singers, and which became the defining style of all bluegrass vocalists. The spirit of Bill Monroe lives on in the old and new music he and his band will bring to Australian audiences on this tour.

“Rowan is one of the greatest and most important of all the bluegrass players. He understands what he calls “the joy” of bluegrass and acoustic music, and, with wonderful artlessness, he insists that he is coming to Australia to do nothing more than “be a singer of songs and a player of tunes”. His admirers know he will be much, much more than that.” – Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald

Mike & Tinker are joined by co-hort Ged Corben on guitar, mandolin & resonator. Ged has at one time or another played with the original Cruel Sea, is lead guitarist with The Lime Spiders & moonlights with Rebecca Hancock & The Prison Wives, amongst others.
All three were members of the now defunct Wheelers & Dealers, winners of numerous National Folk Awards, who toured NSW, VIC and QLD extensively over the last 15 years.

The band play an eclectic up tempo mix of Celtic & American Folk, with a touch of Western Swing & Roots thrown in. They feature material from Mike & Tinker’s latest album “For Good Measure”, & Mike’s solo album “ The Dining Room Sessions”.

CHRIS HENRY & THE HARDCORE GRASS at Hotel Gearin, Katoomba Blue Mountains, Sat 31st Oct 2015

Chris Henry & The Hardcore Grass (USA)
Special Guests The Prannies

Sat 31st Oct 2015
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN, 273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

Chris Henry & The Hardcore Grass is a must-see band for all lovers of roots-based and bluegrass music!

Chris Henry grew up in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, USA, the son of veteran bluegrass musicians, Red and Murphy Henry. He moved to Nashville about ten years ago, and has been making quite a name for himself as one of the most highly regarded and sought-after young musicians on the American bluegrass scene. He received an International Bluegrass Music Association nomination for Song of the Year in 2011 for writing “Walking West to Memphis.” He was in Shawn Camp’s band, and in the last few years he has been playing with his own band, The Hardcore Grass, and with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band.

Chris comes from a traditional bluegrass background and blends his appreciation for the classic sound with his own creativity to stretch out into wide open spaces that have audiences riveted to hear and see what happens next.

He impressed Australian audiences when he toured here early 2014 as a member of the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Trio. As a result of that tour, he was invited back to Australia to headline the Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival later that year.
Chris Henry & The Hardcore Grass was so well-received at the festivals that he played last year, that he has now been invited back as a headline act at the Dorrigo and MountainGrass bluegrass festivals, and the Healesville Music Festival.
This year he is touring with a new 5-piece version of his band.

“Chris Henry is the premier Monroe-style mandolinist of his generation” – International Bluegrass Music Association

The Prannies are an eclectic band of misfits with diverse backgrounds in rock, Irish, bluegrass, old timey and everything in between. Comprising of virtuoso fiddler (Slim Dusty’s favourite), sultry singer and all-round musical genius Mike Kerin, Blue Mountains dweller Tinker Duffy, who plays fiery accordion and sings with husky vocals, and Ged Corben who holds the band together with his powerhouse rhythm guitar and delicate slide and mandolin work.

Winner of no less than 6 Golden Guitars, Mike Kerin leads this lineup of long time collaborators & stalwarts of the Oz Folk & Bluegrass scene. Apart from producing, arranging, recording & playing on many fine albums, Mike played for 10 years with 80‘s Country fave’s The Flying Emus, for more than 20 years with Slim Dusty in his Travelling Country Band, and currently tours with Anne Kirkpatrick & numerous national & international acts. Mike was the featured artist on the recently released ABC Fiddle Album “The Devil’s Instrument”. He has also played as a featured artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, touring Australia & Slovenia.
Tinker Duffy is no stranger to the NSW Folk scene. Hailing originally from Armidale, she has dazzled audiences with her fiery accordion playing from Newtown to Gulgong, & Yeppoon to Port Fairy over the last 20 years. She has had a lifelong involvement in the traditional music, song and dance of Ireland as well as in bush bands, dance bands, choirs and sessions.

THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND + DVA (Czech Republic) + Vanessa Caspersz & Gaia Scarf at Hotel Gearin, Katoomba Blue Mountains, Fri 1st May 2015

Nomadic Fish and Fusion Boutique Present:
THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND
+ DVA (Czech Republic)
+ Special Guests – Vanessa Caspersz & Gaia Scarf (Blue Mountains)

Fri 1st May 2015
HOTEL GEARIN
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN
273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba
Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

One Show Only – Don’t miss your chance to enjoy this unique musical experience!

The mesmerising and fiery acoustic 4-piece that is THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND deliver high-energy Chainsaw Future-Folk.

DVA (Hradec Králové / Pardubice / Czech Republic) create alt-pop-songs / kitchen beat box / tango / cabaret / cirkus / radionoise!

Operating in their own microcosm, DVA have stood out with an idiosyncratic sonic lexicon – “pop for non-existing radios” or “folklore of non-existing nations”, as they say. The duo – it takes two “dva” in Czech, to tango – Bára Kratochvílová and Jan Kratochvíl, have carved out a niche with their rich musical landscape. Established in 2006, the Czech project have toured the world, playing at esteemed festivals including SXSW, Eurosonic, Fusion or OFF, charming their growing global fan base with smart sophisticated pop. In 2012, DVA toured the US twice and played more than 80 concerts in 10 countries. DVA’s soundtrack for the computer game Botanicula scooped the main prize at Independent Games Festival awards in San Francisco last year, and was also nominated for the UK Sound & Music Awards.

DVA’s much-acclaimed debut album Fonók was released in 2008 which was followed by Hu in 2010, and an eponymous soundtrack for the aforementioned video game in 2013 with a new record Nipomo. Their lyrics, written in an imaginary language, remain abstruse, yet universally comprehensible, while the music is similarly peculiarly universal – an aural collage of “pop, kitchen beatbox, tango, cabaret, circus, radio noise”, bearing their unmistakable stamp – quirky, but accessible. Championed by critics – from the BBC to national and specialist music press and beyond – and fans alike, DVA are one of the most successful Czech bands to emerge in the last decade. Aside from music, they are also active in theatre whose features they have transferred into the music as well. It is not surprising then that the project’s seeds were sewn during the recording of the science fiction radio play by I. Asimov – Victory Unintentional. DVA are a living and breathing aural organism, its own thing.

Blue Mountains locals Vanessa Caspersz and Gaia Scarf will be opening up the evening with their own endearing and quirky blend of Jazz / Folk / Hip Hop / Beatbox.

“I like to pretend that I am a dj but only have my mouth and a ukulele” Vanessa Caspersz.
She holds an orchestra of drums, vocals and trumpet in her mouth, a ukulele in her hands and a loop pedal at her feet

Vanessa Caspersz is an up-and-coming artist from the Blue Mountains, home of Australian hip hop sensations Hermitude, Urthboy and Thundamentals. Starting off performing acoustically, Vanessa branched out into developing her beat boxing skills when she moved to London in 2011. She worked closely with well-established beat boxing artists Reeps One and Shlomo, and joined the London Contemporary Voices choir, incorporating vocal percussion into their performances and touring at festivals across the country. Beyond her tight beat boxing skills, Vanessa has a hauntingly striking voice and plays a mean ukulele that captivates her audience and brings her beats to life. She competed in both the UK and Australian beat box championships, and is currently performing and collaborating with various artists.

THE UNDERSCORE ORKESTRA (Portland, Oregon, USA) at Frankie’s Pizza By Slice Sydney.
Thur 19th March 2015 – FREE ENTRY!
Australia/NZ Tour.

BALKAN, KLEZMER, GYPSY JAZZ & SWING.
With a repertoire consisting of both original and traditional material.

Eclectic and energetic band ‘The Underscore Orkestra’ are based out of Portland Oregon, USA and have been touring the US, Canada, Europe and Central America, Australia and New Zealand for the past 8+ years.

Guaranteed to get you up and moving whether you like to swing dance, Balkan Folk dance, or just go out and shake it!

Their Performance evokes the old world and the new, the eerily haunting air of sounds and movements from the East, with definite roots in the West. Influences are far and wide but range from New Orleans Jazz, to Eastern European Roma and Klezmorim music, Manouche Swing, to Acoustic Metal. They often incorporate live Belly Dance and Circus Arts in their shows.
Syncopated Rhythms and original dance vignettes. Guaranteed to get you up and dancing! It will put the p in your pistol and the zing in your zinger. Guaranteed to boost your bravado and perk your package, tempt your temptress with The Underscore Orkestra. An experience you have to see and hear to believe.

Instrumentation is Violin, Guitar, Accordion, Horns, Clarinet, Bass, Sousaphone Percussion, Harmonica, Piccolo, Ukulele, Bambazoo and Belly Dancing.

The Underscore Orkestra has taken many forms over the years and has travelled far and wide in many ways. Including vegetable oil powered tour bus, planes, trains, boats, autos, hitch hiking. Their favourite way is by bicycle, which they have done numerous times in Europe.

The Underscore Orkestara will be on their 3rd tour of Australia. They have built up a good following from their extensive touring in the past (previous tours included a range of shows over 3 months and also multiple festival appearances at Illawarra Folk Festival, Cobargo Folk Festival, Numeralla Folk Festival as well as Peats Ridge Music Festival and Rainbow Serpent Festival and this year’s Falls Festival in Bryon Bay!)
They will be all up and down the East coast from QLD, NSW, VIC, and back up again.
They are very excited to be returning to play new material written and inspired by their previous Oz adventures.

Their live shows are something to remember for years to come, they are fond of selling many wares, including Underscore Underwear, Uncle Jerry’s Magically Malicious Mustache Wax, CD’s, Neck Ties, Nude Calendars, Music boxes, and Stand up tub Basses.

“The band’s Eastern European sound is sort of a mix between Gypsy rock big guns DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello. They’ve got the very ethnic sound of the former, and though they play fast, it’s not at the manic punk level of the latter. The phrase ‘foot-stompin’ also is apt, as their original and traditional pieces have a way of making people move” – Reno Retro Mix

“You know a band is good when at the end of their sound check the audience starts clapping” – New Paltz Cultural Collective

“Best Local Album” – KBOO Radio “Amazing!!!” – VPR

THE RUMJACKS Album Launch with Special Guests Belle Jar AT HOTEL GEARIN, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Thur 5th Mar 2015

Troubadour Touring and Fusion Boutique Present:
The Rumjacks
Special Guests Belle Jar (Blue Mountains)

Thur 5th March 2015
HOTEL GEARIN
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN
273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba
Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

With their brand new studio album ‘Sober & Godless’ due for release in early 2015, The Rumjacks are hitting the road in February, March & April for an extensive Australian tour.

Born of a desire to make music in general and Celtic-flavoured punk in particular, The Rumjacks are an entity rather askew, cast adrift of the mainstream and the industry as a whole. These five musical misfits from the cobbled streets of old Sydney town are a group unto themselves and the music they’ve made their own.

Since the group’s inception, they’ve come to embrace the oddball world they’ve found themselves in, becoming part of the gnarled, handmade furniture you might say, drawing from a solid base and pushing, stretching, bullying it to their every whim, creating something of their own. You may make comparison to The Pogues, Billy Bragg, The Dropkick Murphys et al, and you’d be right to, but you’d be well advised to acknowledge the twist these five have put to their music themselves, making it something unique.
“Well it’s absolutely vital,” concurs front man McLaughlin on putting their own stamp on this music, something that has led to the band cultivating a marvellous versatility which sees them comfortable on any number of stages, in any number of situations. From their heavy Celtic roots to the driving punk rock rhythms, the cheeky lyrics and rampant, greased up bonhomie that drips from the stage whenever these five step up, this is what The Rumjacks bring.

It’s been this versatility, not to mention the flat-out talent and drive they exude, that’s seen the band share stages with artists as diverse as Gogol Bordello, Guttermouth, the Dropkick Murphys, GBH, UK Subs and The Aggrolites. It’s seen the two releases since their debut EP – the Sound As A Pound EP (’09) and debut long-player, Gangs Of New Holland (’10) – stand up as solid works, finding places amongst the collections of fans of rock, punk, folk, reggae, Irish and god knows what else.

Frankie McLaughlin: Vocals, tin whistle.
Johnny McKelvey: Bass, vocals
Anthony Matters: Drums, vocals
Gabriel Whitbourne: Guitars, vocals
Adam Kenny: Mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, bodhran, acoustic guitar, vocals

Ignited in the catacombs of Paris, Belle Jar brings you the madness and mayhem of infectious rhythms and manic fables.
They play an original blend of Gypsy, Klezmer, Swing and Pop styles, with English and French lyrics. They tell stories of anti-heroes trying to break out of the ordinary that will get you up and dancing.
Belle Jar‘s infectious energy has spread from festival to festival over the last couple of years. Their genuine interaction with people and their passion for what they do is evident. These guys will fire up your old country longings as wild boom-chak boom-chak rhythm meets bent melody.”

JARON FREEMAN-FOX & THE OPPOSITE OF EVERYTHING (CANADA) AT HOTEL GEARIN, KATOOMBA, BLUE MOUNTAINS

Nomadic Fish and Fusion Boutique Present:
Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything (Canada)
Special Guests – Lime & Steel (Blue Mountains)

Sat 31st Jan 2015
Australian Tour
HOTEL GEARIN
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN
273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba
Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

Limitlessly creative and playful, “The Opposite of Everything” dances down a line between the beautiful and the absurd, transforming Freeman-Fox’s intricate violin compositions into an infectious party.

Winners of three Canadian Folk Music Awards, the ensemble also features Toronto’s finest and most adventurous musicians: New Orleans-style clarinettist John Williams, Klezmer accordionist Robbie Grunwald, Jazz bassist Charles James, and drummer Dan Stadnicki.

Continually redefining what the violin is capable of, Jaron has fused his fiddling roots with a study of Jazz and Indian classical music. At age 14, he began an apprenticeship with Canadian fiddle pioneer Schroer, which lasted until Shroer’s death in 2008. Jaron has been playing his mentor’s custom 5-string violin since.

In four busy years, the outfit has performed across North America and Europe, including Winnipeg Folk Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival, WOMEX in Greece and Folk Alliance in Memphis.
This will be their first appearance in Australia!

“The hyper-kinetic Jaron Freeman-Fox is the Jimi Hendrix of the violin.
With the chops of a classical virtuoso and the soul of a wild-eyed punk, he plays world music in the truest sense of the word, leaping from Gypsy to Klezmer to Celtic to Country without skipping a beat.”
– Ottawa International Jazz Festival

“Jaron Freeman-Fox calls his band the Opposite of Everything. With a name like that, you might expect his music to be pretty adventurous – which it most certainly is.
His new album begins with a remixed sample from a horse auction that melds into Indian vocal percussion. Before the album is finished, you’ll hear growling that would make Tom Waits proud, a version of the Doors’ “People Are Strange” that makes Jim Morrison sound boring and even some throat singing.
Freeman-Fox’s musical exploration has literally taken him all over the world and he finds inspiration everywhere he goes.”
– Reuben Maan, CBC Music

“Jaron Freeman Fox and the Opposite of Everything electrified the crowds wherever they went at Live From the Rock. The exuberance, talent, creativity and controlled insanity demonstrated by this exciting Toronto conglomeration was a joy to behold.”
– Jennifer Ives: Artistic Director, Live from the Rock Folk Festival

www.theoppositeofeverything.com

With a driving banjo, doghouse bass, a sweet fiddle, Blue Mountains locals ‘Lime and Steel’ take a bluegrass string band, throw in a rock drum kit and a uniquely Australian intonation for a show of originals that moves from pub rock anthems about EH Holdens to convict murder ballads. Lime and Steel’s sweet harmonies twang through Bogan bluegrass love-songs and wind up into a spoon-tappin’ fast-pickin’ wine-soaked hillbilly family singalong.
