FUSION BOUTIQUE presents SHARK & FOX | Emily-Rose Sarkova (AUS) & Jaron Freeman-Fox (CAN) in Concert at Katoomba Lighthouse, Blue Mountains

Fusion Boutique Presents

w/ Special Guest
Kieran Sawyer
Live in Concert at the Katoomba Lighthouse

SATURDAY 13th April 2024
Doors Open 6:00pm | Show Start 7:00pm

Venue: KATOOMBA LIGHTHOUSE
126 Victoria St, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780

International folk act brings virtuosic music to the Blue Mountains

Emily-Rose Sarkova (accordion/vocals/synthesiser) and Jaron Freeman-Fox (fiddle/vocals/viola d’amore/fretless guitar) are Shark and Fox, an irresistible Canadian-Australian duo who shape-shift between many musical traditions to create an exciting sound on the forefront of folk music. Joined by the thrum of a guest drummer Rose Callaghan, this duo becomes a trio in their inaugural tour of Australia.

After meeting in Australia and then spending a month in Toronto composing and recording their debut album, Shark and Fox are embarking on their first Australian tour. Between performances at the National Folk Festival (ACT) and Fairbridge Folk Festival (WA), they will be sharing their music with the Blue Mountains at Katoomba Lighthouse on Saturday 13th April, presented by Fusion Boutique.

Frenetic Bulgarian dances, haunting Appalachian twangs, droning Irish reels, Swedish polskas and songs that speak into existence the ephemeral mysteries of life, all effortlessly yet meticulously woven together by the vast shared history of the fiddle and accordion as musical companions. This irresistible Canadian-Australian collaboration shape-shifts between traditions, occasionally to the point that the instruments themselves transform; a fiddle to viol d’amore or fretless guitar, an accordion to modular synthesiser, all driven by the infectious clatter, thunder and swish of a drum that serves as both a trampoline for the imagination and morse code from the brain to the body.

Jaron’s projects have garnered multiple Canadian music awards, whilst Emily-Rose has been an ARIA and Art Music Award finalist.

“Playing with Jaron is like getting the ultimate musical adrenaline fix” says Emily-Rose, “Audiences are going to be immersed in music from a vast history of accordion and fiddle folk music and be surprised by the places this music can go.”

More about Jaron

Reared in the mountains of Canada’s northwest, and steeped in study under the great traditional musicians of India, Scandinavia, Siberia, and Bulgaria, Jaron Freeman-Fox forms a new narrative of what the violin is capable of, and compels the listener to take his unique refraction of world music on it’s own terms.

Jaron’s singular style was encouraged from an early age as an apprentice of Canada’s renowned fiddle pioneer, the late Oliver Shroer who’s violin Jaron still plays.

Jaron went on to study Carnatic classical music in South India, hardanger fiddle in Norway, Morin Khuur in Mongolia, and Gadulka in Bulgaria. Synthesizing his myriad influences, Jaron’s own band Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything, toured tirelessly from 2011-2017 across North America, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and Australia.

The band’s self-titled album garnered 3 Canadian folk Music Awards, the instrumental category for the Independent Music Awards and the International Songwriting Contest.  Since receiving the the KM Hunter Award for excellence in Music, in 2017, Jaron has been busy producing records for many projects including his own, while developing a new repertoire and electro-acoustic performance environment, based around his customised 12-string viola d’amore and fretless guitar.

More about Emily-Rose

Emily-Rose Sarkova is one of Australia’s most vivacious musical chameleons. Her songs and soundscapes are a kaleidoscope dream of contemporary folk, where songwriting meets world jazz and electro-acoustic experiments.

Most recently a finalist in the prestigious Art Music Awards Best Jazz Work for her album ‘Upon These Open Skins’ with ‘Emily-Rose & The Wild Things’, Emily-Rose’s music is always highly crafted and boundary pushing. She graduated from Sydney Conservatorium in classical piano (2010) having studied in Germany on a Baden-Wurtenburg scholarship, and in France with renowned professor John Paul Sevilla. In expanding her instrumental palette to include accordion, bandoneon, synthesisers and voice, her co-creation and management of several musical groups have included: Tango group ‘Tángalo’, who received a 2014 Australia Council for the Arts JUMP mentorship, allowing Emily-Rose to study in Argentina, and tour with Latin Grammy nominated “Duo Ramirez-Satorre”, and world-music project ‘Chaika’, whose third studio album ‘Arrow’ was nominated for the 2019 ARIA Best World Music Album.

+ Special Guest Kieran Sawyer

Kieran Sawyer is a guitarist specialising in the fascinating and alluring colours of Tango and Argentine folkloric music. Based in the Blue Mountains of NSW, from a young age he has always been intrigued by different folk rhythms, which has seen his musical journey spanning a number of genres and led to his specialisation in the harmony and pulse of Tango and Argentine folk music.

Kieran has studied in Australia and overseas in Spain and South America, spending 6 months living and absorbing the musical culture of Buenos Aires in 2019, where he studied tango and folklore guitar intensively. Kieran performs with artists such as Diana Reyes Flamenco School, a bandoneón-guitar duo with Argentine based Owen Salomé and currently performs with Canberra-based Argentinian bandoneonist Rodolfo Caivano.

His solo repertoire includes a gorgeous selection of classic and modern Argentinean Tango and Folk music, including some of his own imaginative arrangements. A truly magical start to this evening’s journey through sonic traditions.

Steve Poltz (USA) is BACK !

‘The 22nd Time’s A Charm’ Australian Tour

After flooring audiences at Bluesfest, Port Fairy Folk Festival, National Folk Festival, Blue Mountains Music Festival and ECHO Festival and club shows across the country in 2023, world renowned troubadour Steve Poltz returns to Australian shores for the 22nd time.

Some people start life with a plan. Not Steve. He opens himself up to the universe in a way most of us will never be loose enough to achieve, and the universe responds with a wink, a seemingly bottomless well of inspiration, and the talent to truly connect with an audience.

With a cult following that includes fellow musicians, regular folks and festival goers who stumble onto his performances, there’s no common denominator to Steve’s fans. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and raised in San Diego, CA Steve toured and recorded with San Diego cult favourites The Rugburns (they still play annual sold-out reunion shows). But it was through his creative partnership with Jewel that he vaulted into the national spotlight; co-writing her multiplatinum Billboard Hot 100-busting smash, “You Were Meant For Me,” and continues to work with her to this day.

Over the years, the Nashville-based troubadour has built a fascinating solo catalogue, earmarked by his debut, ‘One Left Shoe’, ‘Dreamhouse’, ‘Folk Singer‘, and 2019’s ‘Shine On’. No Depression crowned him, “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit, suggesting at times a sunnier, less psychedelic Todd Snider, or maybe a less wan, washed Jackson Brown,” while the Associated Press dubbed him “part busker, part Iggy Pop and part Robin Williams, a freewheeling folkie with a quick wit and big heart.”

Among other collaborations, GRAMMY-winning bluegrass phenom Billy Strings tapped him to co-write “Leaders” on 2021’s Renewal and he’s co-written with Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm, Oliver Wood and even Mojo Nixon.

…  and when he comes to your town, he’ll say, as he does every night, “This is the best show I’ve ever played.” And hell, maybe it just is.

Ultimately, Steve never needed a plan.
He’s something of a natural, after all.

Fusion Boutique Presents
DANIEL CHAMPAGNE ‘Australian Summer Tour 2024’
Live in Concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

SATURDAY 17th February 2024
Doors Open 6pm | Show Start 7pm

Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 15 Katoomba St, Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
– Entry via the Carrington Hotel Driveway –

We are very pleased to welcome Daniel back again to the Blue Mountains and after the last SOLD OUT shows we advise booking early to avoid disappointment!

Daniel Champagne lives and breathes live music. Playing upwards of 250 shows a year he is passionate about spreading it around the world and on the back of an action packed 2023 traversing the globe to rave reviews he will bring his tour back home for a string of NSW, VIC & QLD shows with a brand new album – ‘The Pursuit’

Growing up in the Bega Valley, on the Far South Coast of New South Wales the story goes that the young singer-songwriter and one of a kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a 5-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12, training classically throughout his teens and performing wherever he could, honing his craft and developing the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he finished school, turned professional and hit the road without looking back.
The following 15 years have seen him independently release 7 studio albums, tour relentlessly around the globe, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel, INXS, John Butler, Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela.

He has been described as “the finest guitar player of this generation”, “a leading light in acoustic music” and “a performer that must be seen to be believed” and from January to March 2024, music lovers in NSW, VIC and QLD will be treated to an intimate live experience not to be missed!

WHAT THE PRESS SAY…
“The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills, he coaxes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws.” The Calgary Herald, CANADA
“Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in the thousands towards the main stage to witness a young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stopper.” The Firefly Column, USA
“Daniel Champagne is a crossroads. Fusing the strong traditions of Blues, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will become an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation.” The Indie Blender, CANADA
“reinventing roots guitar” Rhythms Magazine, AUSTRALIA
“Watching Daniel Champagne perform is a once in a lifetime experience. He is a true prodigy that plays like no one else could possibly play unless they spent at least two lifetimes studying the art.” BW Review, NEW ZEALAND
“Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band, Champagne is just magical” Themusic.com.au, AUSTRALIA
“You feel as if he just invented the instrument yesterday and was discovering its possibilities afresh” Ted Gioia (American jazz critic and music historian)

FUSION BOUTIQUE presents BEN LEE vs THE COLLAPSE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TOUR w/ DJ DadBod in Concert at Baroque Room, Katoomba, Blue Mountains

Craft Music & Fusion Boutique Present
BEN LEE vs THE COLLAPSE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TOUR
+ DJ DadBod
Live in Concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

FRIDAY 6th October 2023
Doors Open 7:30pm | Show Start 8pm

Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 15 Katoomba St, Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
– Entry via the Carrington Hotel Driveway –

In one corner, we have an industry all but obliterated by corporate interests, streaming platforms and a pandemic, now overtaken by conformity, materialism and fear. In the other, stands a solitary figure, an unpredictable maverick born of the name Ben Lee, preparing to dance, to bob and weave one more time, as the crowd holds its collective breath, opening their mouths only to gasp in awe, or to munch on popcorn, while simultaneously checking their social media applications.

What does it take for a musician/storyteller/raconteur to not only survive, but thrive, under the current conditions? This is a concert experience that will reveal all… as audiences around Australia witness with their own eyes this freak of nature, now over three decades into his career, reviving the songs that made him a household name, mixed in with new material that Rolling Stone Magazine recently labelled “the best of his career”, all delivered with his trademark “am I joking or not?” sense-of-humour and a relationship to singing on key that can only be called “approximate”. Our hero promises crowds an evening of music, storytelling and pure entertainment.

A lot has happened since Lindy Morrison vowed never to see Rob Snarski perform again. Morrison approached the singer-songwriter post show, having attended a liquid lunch and feeling a tad vulnerable, she berated him for embracing sadness and lacking up-tempo, finger-snapping, melodic numbers. En garde!!

Not long after, the two began performing around the country in duo mode – before roping in ‘Evil’ Graham Lee [Triffids/pedal steel], Shane O’Mara [Rebecca’s Empire/Chris Wilson/Silversound] and more recently Dan Kelly [nephew of Paul] to form ‘supergroup’ …SnarskiCircusLindyBand

After touring briefly together, arguing incessantly along the way, they somehow agreed to record a batch of new songs Snarski had been conjuring with this band in mind.

So, with the new mini-album “Someone Said That Someone Said” in their pocket [due for release in early May] the group of misfits hit the road in the depths of Australia’s autumnal months to play their new tunes including “Shane O’Mara Wore Mascara”, “Since I Slept With You Everybody Wants To Sleep With Me” [a co-write with Lindy] and take a deep dive into Snarski’s less humorous, narrative driven, song writing past.

“Someone Said That Someone Said” available in May on all streaming services and via MGM Distribution

“Midnight Tea Party dance through an infectious concoction of rock, gypsy and dub to craft a sound that belongs entirely to themselves.” – Happy Mag

Come and celebrate the release of their latest EP ‘Electro Bazaar’.
From the wonky, circus like intro of the title track to the mesmerising sound of the Greek “tsoura” on Monsieur Ouzo, the dubbed out sounds of Hatter’s Hideout and the final assault of Glitterworm, this EP showcases the high energy, dance vibes that the group is renowned for, as well as the ingenuity of the band members and their mastery of the instruments.

+ Special Guests COOKING WITH CAUSTIC

Molecular Soup is the brand new album from Blue Mountains’ Cooking with Caustic.
An expansive musical trip, inspired by 90s Boom Bap Hip Hop, Dub, Breaks, jazz icons and sci-fi monster movies, the album follows on from their debut long-player From Mercury to Pluto.

Cooking with Caustic features beats, keys and percussion by Caustic Yoda; turntablism by multi NSW DMC-champ DJ Cost; electric and double bass by Jarv Benaud; and trombone and trumpet by Marc Brown. The extended CwC family includes saxophonists Stephen Noble, Eugene Baker and Adrian Symes, and trombonist Tim Coggins.

Molecular Soup opens with the first single This Digital World. The track is an instrumental epic of heavy dub grooves and breaks, fusing sweeping horn-lines with adroit turntablism. This Digital World is inspired by our changeable society, and the way humans have adapted to a new digital world. It represents the juxtapositions in modern life like the dominance of digitized music platforms counterbalanced by the simultaneous rise of old-school physicality like vinyl. This also reflects the music created by CwC, which is built from modern technologies such as samplers, drum machines and turntables, but is organic at its core, and enriched by classic instruments like horns, bass, drums and percussion. The second track, Thoughts Manifest is a smoky jazz-inspired boom bap head-nodder, rolling along under triumphant strutting brass. The theme here is of collective minds working together. The third track, Murders in Wax, sees DJ Cost murdering the turntables over funky, science lab-themed breaks. With this album CwC have delivered some upbeat tunes with drastic tempo changes, really letting the instrumentation and musicianship come to the fore. The next tune, Blindside is a beautiful, chilled out downbeat. Think warm sunny mornings, god-rays coming through the trees, crickets chirping. The fifth track, The Mountain, is a quirky sub and bass-heavy boom bap inspired by the band’s home-town clifftops. Molecular Soup concludes with another epic, Fifty Foot Mantis, brimming with nasty breaks and dynamic changes. Here, one of CwCs favourite themes gets a revisit, B monster movies. Giant mantis for world destruction.

Check out this latest release from CwC, out through Scratches Records. Available on 12” vinyl and digital.

FUSION BOUTIQUE presents DAVE GRANEY & CLARE MOORE Album Launch Tour 2024 in Concert at Baroque Room, Katoomba, Blue Mountains

Fusion Boutique Presents
DAVE GRANEY & CLARE MOORE ‘(strangely)(emotional)’ Album Launch Tour 202
4
Live in Concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

SATURDAY 4th May 2024
Doors Open 6pm | Show Start 7pm

Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 15 Katoomba St, Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
– Entry via the Carrington Hotel Driveway –

Coral Snakes Legends and prolific alt artists Dave Graney & Clare Moore Unveil New Album “(strangely)(emotional)”

“As I have said many times nobody else is making music like this. A combination of the familiar tropes of rock and pop intermingled with literary lyrical explorations, jazz elements, ambient sounds, and a degree of abstraction masking astute commentary on the state of the world today. There are more ideas in these 15 songs than most artists achieve in their careers”. – Bob Osborne – DIFFERENT NOISES – Salford UK

Dave Graney and Clare Moore have in recent years been swinging between song focused studio albums (like this one) and more band focused rock albums, (like their previous set in A Mistly).
(strangely)(emotional) is so carefully titled because that’s the age we live in. A person has to be sure and careful of their words. It’s a sensitive area, the world, in 2024. Even though it is also brutal, viral and violent all at once. (The ground we walk upon is contested and just holding together with surface tension). So the words are quarantined from each other, in parentheses so as not to be qualifying or commenting on the other.

The sounds on the album come from vintage drum machines, electric (six and twelve string) and acoustic (nylon and steel string) guitars, pedal steel, harp, harmonica, electric piano, drums, vibes, marimba, mellotron and tenor and soprano sax.
The words are rich, playful and very personal. Dave Graney is a proud Creative Creep.
(strangely)(emotional) comes after a year where Graney and Moore toured the country to joy and acclaim with their 90s band Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes. This album was cooking away in the background all the while.
It’s a Dave Graney and Clare Moore album. They’ve always done their own thing. This time, it’s (strangely)(emotional).

“Last night (Sat) at the Great Club in Sydney’s Marrickville, a rolling triumph. Dave, solo and acoustic with brand new songs, a brace of wistful glances back at childhood, fam and hometown, and not quite like anything that has come before from this extraordinary maker of sonic stories. Then more with lifetime offsider and partner of all labours CLARE MOORE, multi-instrumentaling it on melodica then piano before making those drums sing and wail like few can. And then a ‘power trio’ as Dave described it, and it was, with the mid-set appearance of a local (Sydney) bassplayer, Gregory Thorsby, who knocked everyone flat with jazz and funk stylings that would not have been out of place in Weather Report, Sly And The Family Stone or the classic Miles Davis rosary of albums from 1967-74. This, a perfect reinvention of all the diamonds from the vast Graney-Moore back catalogue. All this and ‘Traumatic Shit,’ a kind of talking blues that gave Derek And Clive a run for their money. We split our britches laughing, I tells ya. Yea, among the two sets of wonder and stardust, personal faves like ‘That Old Swagger’, ‘Wilco Got No Wilco’, ‘Night Of The Wolverine’, uberclassic ‘You’re JUst Too Hip, Baby’, and an encore featuring a mighty Ronsonesque wigout guitar solo that took off the tops of our heads.
The new album ‘( strangely) ( emotional)’ is out in April. All I can say is GET IN”. –
Mark Cornwall author and musician

Songwriter and performer Dave Graney and multi-instrumentalist Clare Moore were in the Moodists from 1978 to 1986. Then the White Buffaloes/Coral Snakes 1987-1997. Then the Royal Dave Graney Show and Lurid Yellow Mist to the mistLY. They have also been involved in several feature film soundtracks and Dave Graney released his fourth book, a book of lyrics called THERE HE GOES WITH HIS EYE OUT (collected lyrics 1980-2023).
Dave Graney was awarded ‘Best Male Vocalist’ at the ARIA Music Awards of 1996 for his work on The Soft ‘n’ Sexy Sound, while “Feelin’ Kinda Sporty” won ‘Best Video’ in 1997 and he has received seven other ARIA Award nominations. Clare Moore Joint award with Jeanie Lewis and Kate Ceberano for Lifetime Achievement award at the 2023 Australian Women In Music Awards.

Dave and Clare will be performing as a trio with Greg Thorsby on bass.

Fusion Boutique Presents
PAUL A. GEORGE (Lead Guitarist TIJUANA CARTEL) ‘Last Dance’ Album Launch Tour
+ Special Guests MIGRET (Duo)
Live in Concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

SATURDAY 1st June 2024
Doors Open 7pm | Show Start 8pm

Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 15 Katoomba St, Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
– Entry via the Carrington Hotel Driveway –

Paul A. George is the guitarist/singer/producer for Tijuana Cartel.
He makes music to move to, music to meditate to too. Inspired from a world of music and a home in the Australian rainforest.

Paul has had a wide ranging experience of musicality. From living in India and studying sitar, to training his fingers in the south of Spain to the intricate rhythms of flamenco. His multicultural approach towards playing the guitar and his healthy appetite for deep bassy grooves are important factors for the magic of Paul A. George.

Desert Sounds, Flamenco guitars, Organic House, Down-Tempo.

From the front man of Australian band Tijuana Cartel, these deeper rainforest inspired beats are aimed to induce a soulful, intuitive exploration of dance and electronica.

‘If Sunday afternoon had an ultimate soundtrack, it would be Tijuana Cartel’s Paul A George and his spellbinding acoustic guitar, taking our final day in paradise to new frontiers, wrapped in an emotional, star studded blanket of wild west meets deep house.’ Melbourne Royalty

‘Guitar and synthesiser grow around each other organically, sprouting magnificent sonic flowers, their sound colours complementing each other with natural perfection. The beat underneath throbs along in an unobtrusive, yet highly propulsive groove.’ Acker Records

Paul A. George’s debut, “Last Dance,” isn’t a dirge, it’s a fiesta. Flamenco strings duel with pulsating electronica, conjuring Tulum sunsets and desert mirages in equal measure. Flamenco bleeds into cumbia, house thumps into ancient rhythms – a seasoned nomad weaving sonic tapestries across continents.

“It’s a culmination of all the things I love, and bleed together in a way that could move a crowd, or let someone get lost in a set of headphones,” says George. “I’ve got rooms full of old synths and guitars. I felt comfortable attaching myself to all of them at some stage of the album.”

+ Special Guests MIGRET (Duo)

Migret is an indie-electronica band from Blue Mountains, Australia, that formed in 2019. The band is made up of Argentinan-born couple Betsy and Fran.
They released their first studio album in 2019 entitled “Un monton de casas” that was released independently by the band (currently sold out).
After a successful tour of their home country and a few single releases, the band is now building their home on wheels with the intentions to travel around the island.

Intimate compositions and dreamy pop vocals that are emotionally resonant and add a layer of ethereal beauty. All wrapped in an cinematic soundscape atmosphere with guitar delays, ambient synths and minimalist sequences.

“The result would be “Un montón de casas”, an EP of subtle compositions. With a delicate voice that does not elude emotionality, they sing about airports, boats that go nowhere and old notebooks that burn. All wrapped in an intimate atmosphere with guitar delays, synthesizers and minimalist programming.” – diario contexto
“Migret generates ethereal atmospheres, quite close to those sketched by post-rock bands like Explosions In The Sky, but it does it in a much more emotional tune and with the protagonism of a female voice that tells stories of misunderstandings and proposes a charming and accurate ambient pop.” – indie hoy

FUSION BOUTIQUE presents MICK THOMAS’ ROVING COMMISSION w/ FULL POWER HAPPY HOUR in Concert at Baroque Room, Katoomba, Blue Mountains

Fusion Boutique Presents
MICK THOMAS’ ROVING COMMISSION
‘Back in the Day’ Tour 2022
+ Special Guests FULL POWER HAPPY HOUR
Live in Concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel

SATURDAY 3rd December 2022
Doors Open 7pm | Show Start 8pm

Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 15 Katoomba St, Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
– Entry via the Carrington Hotel Driveway –

Raconteur, troubadour, balladeer and poet, Mick Thomas is best known as the song master of pub-rock icons Weddings Parties Anything.
His band The Roving Commission features Squeezebox Wally on Piano Accordion and a rotating schedule of talented performers to keep the party alive with Mick’s unique mix of folk, roots and country.

Mick’s ever-evolving talents as a writer and performer defines a career as intriguing as it is enduring. His knockabout image partly explains his close relationship with his audience. They see him as one of them. A loyal mob who have followed him from the Weddo’s through his solo career, Mick’s fans relate to his wistful, sentimental and nostalgic lyrics. Themes such as Australian history (‘Dancing Man’, ‘Gallipoli Rosemary’); fleeting or lost love (‘For a Short Time’, ‘Disrepair’); the bittersweet realities of life’s merry-go-round (‘Away, Away’, ‘Ticket in Tatts’); alienation (‘The Lonely Goth’); and football (‘Tom Wills’,‘Monday’s Experts’); are wrapped in a positive, triumph over adversity message. The characters in Mick’s songs are everyday battlers, as are he and his fans.

Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission are signed to Brisbane-based indie Coolin’ By Sound, with a new album in the works and a new EP ‘Back In The Day’ coming in November, featuring new and old originals and unexpected covers of Cold Chisel, The Saints, Neil Young and Johnny Thunders.

While the group toils away on their next full length album which is going to be called ‘Where Only Memory Can Find You’ – which won’t be out until 2023 – they’ve decided to christen the new relationship with a 7 track “maxi single” called ‘Back in the Day’.

Unarguably the greatest Australian seven-track maxi single since Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons 1978 classic ‘So Young’, ‘Back In The Day’ will feature a mix of new and old originals and some great covers.

Mick and the Commission will be touring nationally November and December with a current line-up featuring old WPA pal Squeezebox Wally and alt-country songbird Brooke Taylor.

Meanjin alt-country/indie-folk five-piece.
They’ve had a busy 2022 so far, carving a path across south-east Queensland venues with taking their latest single ‘Siblings’ on tour as well as supporting Mick Thomas & His Roving Commission.

While on the surface the genesis of Full Power Happy Hour seems to trace directly back to the fertile Brisbane punk scene – where for years many of its members shared both bands and stages – it’s heart dates back further, to singer-songwriter Alex Campbell’s early infatuation with the female voices of the ‘60s folk scene. Having stockpiled a growing collection of heartfelt songs which didn’t suit the punk aesthetic of her earlier bands, she pulled together some like-minded friends from both her past bands and immediate circle and together they set out to mould the Full Power Happy Hour aesthetic. The resultant unique melange mixes the intimacy and fragility of folk icons like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez with the ramshackle bonhomie of The Pogues, tempered by a more modern indie-rock sensibility akin to The Clean. Having built a strong hometown following with their heartfelt, high-energy live shows rife with impassioned lyrics, joyful instrumentation and heart-stirring harmonies.

This will be Meanjin alt-country/indie-folk five-piece Full Power Happy Hour’s own ‘Bit of Brightness’ album launch tour that has just been released through Coolin’ By Sound too (along with MTRC).

Mick Harvey and J.P. Shilo will present their joint show which was last delivered on an extensive tour of Europe in late 2019. Plans to take the show around Australia were knocked on the head by the pandemic and now, more than 3 years later, they are back to present a joint show of J.P. One of these albums is a duets project featuring Mexican singer Amanda Acevedo, who will be joining Harvey and Shilo for a large chunk of the former’s set, augmented by a string quartet and small band.

Mick Harvey is best known as a founding member of The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds as well as being a long- time collaborator to both Nick Cave & PJ Harvey.

He has released more than 10 solo albums under his own name including the four volume series of Serge Gainsbourg translated recordings, as well as a selection of soundtracks for film and television. He has produced a number of acclaimed albums by other artists and consequently been the recipient of several Australian industry awards including AFI Best Original Score for ‘Suburban Mayhem’ in 2006 and in 2011 took out British Producer of the Year for his (co)production on PJ Harvey’s ‘Let England Shake’.

Legendary singer-songwriter, composer and artist Jodi Phillis (The Clouds, Dearhunters, Roger Loves Betty) is releasing her 6th solo album, ‘We Need To Be Free’ in June 2022 through Melbourne based Cheersquad Records.

To celebrate its release, Jodi is touring the Eastern states of Australia with her talented band – featuring guitarist, composer Damien Lane, Matt Steffen and Phil Lally, to perform her uniquely haunting, country-tinged, chamber folk-pop songs that are sure to evoke tears and ecstasy.

Sharing the bill with Jodi and her band on the night are King Curly in full band mode featuring Blue Mountains local Steve Appel, a long-time enigma of original Australian music with his songs that bring to life avenging zombies, ukulele bumblebees, possessed pianos and a certain air of quiet, small town romance, against an impossibly beautiful backdrop of chook-shed instrumentation. The band also features Steve Grieve on guitars and Johnny Graffham on pedal steel.

This is a special night of masterful music not to be missed, from two of Australia’s most unique singer songwriters.

2022 & 2021 CMAA ‘Golden Guitar’, Australian Folk Music and Music Victoria Award winners, The Weeping Willows (Laura Coates and Andrew Wrigglesworth) are a couple of old souls, steeped in Bluegrass tradition and draped in Gothic Americana imagery. They regale their audiences with stories of sunshine and romance, God and The Devil, murder and decay. That kind of description might make them sound like some carefully contrived concept-act but there’s something truly different about The Weeping Willows: they really mean it…

2017-2021 saw The Weeping Willows nominated for 10 x CMAA ‘Golden Guitar’ awards, 4 x Country Music Channel (CMC) awards, 2 x Australian Folk Music Awards (AFMAs), Live Act of the Year (Country) in the National Live Music Awards (NLMAs), performing at AmericanaFest (USA), Folk Alliance International (USA), Maverick Festival (UK), Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Out On The Weekend and the Australian Americana Music Honours.
In recent years they have supported Lukas Nelson & POTR (USA), Hayes Carll (USA), Iris DeMent (USA), Eilen Jewell (USA) and Willie Watson (USA) and completed national and international tours in support of their sophomore album, Before Darkness Comes A-Callin’, which received four-star reviews in Rolling Stone, The Australian and The Music.
A Weeping Willows performance, whether live on location or caught on tape will always delight.

Smith & Jones, a duo from Bathurst, made up of keyboard player and vocalist Abby Smith, with guitarist and vocalist Sophie Jones, have never been ones to follow the pack. Though classified as alt-country, their goal has never been to remain within the confines of any genre, preferring to let their sound and their songs take them where they will. Since their very first meeting in 2014, Smith & Jones have toured extensively with their two albums Dark Gives Way (2017) and Something Worth Learning (2019) in tow, but always with their live shows at the heart of their partnership.
2022 will see Smith & Jones release new recorded work which looks set to further their reputation as a duo worthy of their high regard as both a live act, and their sensitivity and skill as songwriters and recording artists.
‘Waiting on my Turn’ their newest single is set to be released in March.

PETER ROWAN Bluegrass Band featuring Chris Henry (USA) – 2016 Australian Tour at Hotel Gearin, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Sat 2nd April 2016

Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band featuring Chris Henry (USA)
2016 Australian Tour
+ Special Guests Mike, Tinker & Ged

Sat 2nd April 2016
Venue: HOTEL GEARIN, 273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

Legendary US Bluegrass singer-songwriter and Grammy award winner, Peter Rowan, “the voice of Bluegrass”, returns to Australia with his Bluegrass Band, featuring Chris Henry on mandolin, Patrick Sauber on banjo, and Paul Knight on double bass.

Chris Henry is one of the most highly regarded young musicians on the American Bluegrass scene today, “the premier Monroe-style mandolinist of his generation”, while Patrick Sauber has recorded or performed with many artists, including Doc Watson, Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, John Fogerty, Richard Greene and Laurie Lewis, and was the banjo-player in the movie, ‘A Mighty Wind’. Paul Knight has been playing with Peter Rowan in various configurations for about 20 years. His driving acoustic bass has been part of recordings and live performances with the likes of Jim Lauderdale and Laurie Lewis, as well as being integral to the sound of the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band.

Peter Rowan is a true legend of American Bluegrass, with a history dating from 1964 and his role as lead-singer/guitarist with the father of Bluegrass, the late Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys. Rowan then went on to form the revolutionary Folk/Rock band, Seatrain, which recorded two albums in the UK, produced by Beatles producer, George Martin. He left Seatrain to team up with David Grisman, Richard Greene, Bill Keith, & Clarence White (from The Byrds) in bluegrass supergroup, Muleskinner. He and Grisman moved on to form Old & In The Way with Jerry Garcia and Vassar Clements. Since then Rowan has released numerous albums of mostly original songs, is a Grammy Award winner and six-time Grammy nominee, and has performed and recorded with the likes of Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Gillian Welch, Tim O’Brien, Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Del McCoury, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Flaco Jimenez, and Peter Tosh.

Today at the age of 73, he is still touring constantly, writing new songs, making new recordings, including the highly-acclaimed 2013 release on Compass Records, ‘The Old School’, featuring 10 new original songs, and two more recent albums, “Dharma Blues” and “Peter Rowan’s Twang An’ Groove Vol 1”.

Rowan has demonstrated himself to be an artist of unusual depth and imagination, experimenting with other influences, while never losing track of the deep roots and musical purity that are integral to his presence. He is a singer and songwriter without equal, a multi-instrumentalist and accomplished guitarist. His beautiful singing is of the classic “high-lonesome”, borrowed by Monroe from the Appalachian ballad singers, and which became the defining style of all bluegrass vocalists. The spirit of Bill Monroe lives on in the old and new music he and his band will bring to Australian audiences on this tour.

“Rowan is one of the greatest and most important of all the bluegrass players. He understands what he calls “the joy” of bluegrass and acoustic music, and, with wonderful artlessness, he insists that he is coming to Australia to do nothing more than “be a singer of songs and a player of tunes”. His admirers know he will be much, much more than that.” – Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald

Special Guests Mike, Tinker & Ged

Mike, Tinker & Ged are an eclectic band of misfits with diverse backgrounds in rock, Irish, bluegrass, old timey and everything in between. Comprising of virtuoso fiddler (Slim Dusty’s favourite), sultry singer and all-round musical genius Mike Kerin, Blue Mountains dweller Tinker Duffy, who plays fiery accordion and sings with husky vocals, and Ged Corben who holds the band together with his powerhouse rhythm guitar and delicate slide and mandolin work.

Winner of no less than 6 Golden Guitars, Mike Kerin leads this lineup of long time collaborators & stalwarts of the Oz Folk & Bluegrass scene. Apart from producing, arranging, recording & playing on many fine albums, Mike played for 10 years with 80‘s Country fave’s The Flying Emus, for more than 20 years with Slim Dusty in his Travelling Country Band, and currently tours with Anne Kirkpatrick & numerous national & international acts. Mike was the featured artist on the recently released ABC Fiddle Album “The Devil’s Instrument”. He has also played as a featured artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, touring Australia & Slovenia.
Tinker Duffy is no stranger to the NSW Folk scene. Hailing originally from Armidale, she has dazzled audiences with her fiery accordion playing from Newtown to Gulgong, & Yeppoon to Port Fairy over the last 20 years. She has had a lifelong involvement in the traditional music, song and dance of Ireland as well as in bush bands, dance bands, choirs and sessions.
Mike & Tinker are joined by co-hort Ged Corben on guitar, mandolin & resonator. Ged has at one time or another played with the original Cruel Sea, is lead guitarist with The Lime Spiders & moonlights with Rebecca Hancock & The Prison Wives, amongst others.
All three were members of the now defunct Wheelers & Dealers, winners of numerous National Folk Awards, who toured NSW, VIC and QLD extensively over the last 15 years.

The band play an eclectic up tempo mix of Celtic & American Folk, with a touch of Western Swing & Roots thrown in. They feature material from Mike & Tinker’s latest album “For Good Measure”, & Mike’s solo album “ The Dining Room Sessions”.
