Fusion Boutique and Equinox present
ODYSSEY – Byron Mark Septet
A Night of World Music Performance & Flamenco Dance Live in Concert at the Palais Royale Grand Ballroom
Sat 1st April 2023
6:00pm – Doors open to the Grand Ballroom
7:00pm-7:40pm Set 1
Intermission
8:15pm-8:55pm Set 2
Join us for a Spanish inspired evening where musician and composer Byron Mark and an ensemble of musicians perform Byron’s latest album ‘ODYSSEY’ which is scored for piano, string quartet, tabla, cajon and percussion. It explores Flamenco and Indian rhythms, along with Classical and Jazz harmonies, and so much more!
Byron Mark is a professional percussionist, pianist and composer, who has established himself as an in-demand funk, flamenco, jazz, and pop performer both in Australia and internationally. Beginning with study in classical piano from a young age, Byron continued on to learn drums, percussion and saxophone, and has pursued specialist training on cajon in Spain and djembe in West Africa. “I love sounds and I love rhythm. Combining these, I love to create music. From a young age, I would tickle the ivories or tap out beats on anything I could find, and years later, nothing much has changed – in fact I probably do those things a whole lot more now! What has changed though is my musical awareness and knowledge, which continues to grow everyday on the lifelong journey of music.” – Byron Mark
After many tours and performances with flamenco ensembles around Australia, Byron has developed a strong passion for flamenco rhythms. He is using this knowledge to craft unique compositions inspired by flamenco palos, yet coloured with Latin and Jazz rhythms/harmonies, whilst staying true to his classical piano roots. With this, the ‘Byron Mark Septet’ was formed – and is a powerful live ensemble, with members from all around the world.
‘ODYSSEY’ explores the sonic possibilities when combining keys with a traditional string quartet, percussion, and flamenco dance.
Byron will be performing on keyboard and cajon as part of the septet, along with a stellar ensemble including a string quartet, and cajon and tabla players.
Guest flamenco dancer Lauren Majarres will perform on an elevated dance floor stage in featured pieces throughout the concert.
It is mesmerising to watch the connection between the dancer’s footwork and the rhythms and melodies from the ensemble.
Byron’s debut album ‘AMALGAMATION’ in 2016 earned him top 5 in Australia for instrumental composition at the Australian Independent Music Awards. His current projects include percussionist and pianist for various flamenco ensembles in Sydney, including Paco Lara, ‘Arrebato Ensemble’ and Flamenkisimo. Byron also plays keyboards in the Frank Zappa show ‘Petulant Frenzy’, and keyboard/percussion in rhythm and movement ensemble ‘Jamestown Collective’. He is also well known for his unique ‘percussion station’ performance setup when playing in pop duo/trio formats – playing keyboards and percussion simultaneously.
“The performers exuberance was infectious” – ClassikON
“Byron’s piano tinkles, trills and rollicks along; mellifluous, even while exploring jazz & flamenco motifs.” – Syke off Stage

“Luke Escombe is a rock-soul singer, raconteur, blistering blues guitarist, comedian and songwriter, and is very good at them all” – Sydney Morning Herald
Combining poetic lyrics with irresistible grooves and a renowned knack for finding humour in dark places, Luke Escombe is venturing out of his northern beaches idyll to perform an intimate show in the conservatory at Hotel Etico, 11 Montgomery St, Mt Victoria.
The ARIA-nominated owner of “Sydney’s sexiest man voice” is stepping aside from his band leader role with The Vegetable Plot to do a rare solo gig, delving into his back catalogue of albums like Mantown, Creeper Vine, Skeleton Blues and Chronic Symphonic, as well as previewing songs from his first new solo album in over five years: Whale Beach Road.
A formidable guitarist, engaging singer-songwriter, and highly entertaining vocalist, Luke Escombe’s shows are always fun, funny and (just a little bit) filthy.

We are very pleased to welcome Gretta back to the Blue Mountains for her “Coffee Drinkers Anonymous Tour”.
Gretta Ziller is an Americana Folk Singer/Songwriter with an ever-growing list of musical accolades. Gretta started her career as an Opera singer and Bagpipe Teacher, her vocal style has changed somewhat since then, she does on the odd occasion incorporate bagpipes into her set … after all, there aren’t many folks that can sing AND play Long Way to the Top !!
But Gretta isn’t just a one trick pony, If you’ve been foolish enough to think you’ve nailed down her sound then prepare to have the rug pulled out from under you. Ziller’s roots span jazz, blues, rock, pop and classical, and that eclecticism is reflected in her songwriting. Her sound may bear the hallmarks of classic Americana music but its essence is far more diverse.
Her 2017 debut album ‘Queen of Boomtown’ received critical acclaim, it was long-listed for the Australian Music Prize in 2018 and receiving a Golden Guitar and an Age Music Victoria Awards Nomination. In 2020 Gretta received her second Golden Guitar nomination for Vocal Collaboration of the year, she also received an AIR Women In Music mentorship. 2020 also saw Gretta release the first single from her forthcoming album from a new home, signing to ABC Music.
Gretta Ziller returned in 2021 as an APRA PD finalist, her participating in the Global Music Match program through Sounds Australia and her sophomore album ‘Judas tree’ released September 17.
Judas Tree – Released 17th September, 2021 Second Hand – Released 16th September, 2019

Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Palais Performances’ Concerts for Listening Audiences with MONTGOMERY CHURCH (w. band) ‘Where the Quiet Can Hide’ Tour
+ Special Guests CHARLIE & JENSEN
Live in Concert at the Palais Royale Grand Ballroom
Sat 21st May 2022 6:00pm – Doors open to the Grand Ballroom
7:00pm – Charlie & Jensen
7:30pm – Intermission
8:00pm – Montgomery Church
“Montgomery Church make a rare kind of hill country magic: spinning gossamer tapestries with timeless acoustic sounds, quicksilver vocal harmonies, and the kind of unassuming storytelling that burrows deep into the subconscious.” – Gareth Hipwell (Country Update Magazine)
Cielle Montgomery and James Church are, Montgomery Church – a blend of acoustic folk, americana and bluegrass influences, grown and distilled in the Snowy Mountain ranges of country New South Wales.
With their organic union of dobro and guitar, harmony vocals and thoughtful songwriting, this captivating duo, accompanied by their band, are enthralling in their dynamic intimacy and offer up some of the sweetest acoustic sounds being heard around Australia’s folk country scene right now.
They have graced the stages of many iconic music festivals including Nannup Music Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, National Folk Festival & Americanafest in Nashville.
Montgomery Church’s debut album In the Shadow of the Mountain, earned them 2 nominations in the prestigious 2019 Golden Guitar Awards. The duo recently teamed up with 7 x GRAMMY nominated Producer & Engineer, Erick Jaskowiak (Crooked Still, I’m With Her, Darrell Scott) to record their highly anticipated follow-up, Where The Quiet Can Hide, and are thrilled to be celebrating it’s release.
“Montgomery Church are like the Australian version of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings but if Gillian was the daughter of Allison Krauss… sitting on a porch, with tea not whiskey… I’m a tad obsessed… The most graceful duo literally gracing stages right now.” – Fanny Lumsden (Golden Guitar & ARIA Award Winner)
This beautiful evening of live acoustic music will be complimented by the addition of very special guests, Charlie & Jensen.
Charlie & Jensen is a musical conversation between acoustic artists Hunter Beasley and Luke Wright. They journey through genres, shifting from vocally charged original songs, to virtuosic instrumental tunes, taking a stripped-back, raw approach to music and performance.
Having toured Australia many times, including with Italian and World Music sensation Unavantaluna, Charlie & Jensen have also pleased crowds at some of the country’s favourite Folk & Bluegrass Festivals, including The National Folk Festival, Cobargo, Dorrigo and Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Their musical chemistry is evident in their self-titled album, a collection of recordings, unedited and undeniable which saw them at the Golden Guitar awards with two award nominations.

All events will strictly follow COVID safe procedures, as outlined by NSW Health. Hotel Etico provides an employment and social inclusion program making a real difference. *Please note that to continue to meet their public health and work, health and safety requirements it remains a condition of entry that only those guests who have received two doses of a TGA approved Covid-19 vaccination will be permitted entry.

Tailor Birds, the creation of electric violinist Sophie Kinston, is dream folk music goodness, food for the soul, healing, transformative, sound immersion. Combining live looping, foley art, vocals, and now bringing in plant music as the backdrop of sound, this music is simply stunning, a break from the norm, a chance to breath. Telling tales of love, hopes, dreams, created out of the stories she hears from her time on the road, this unique solo show is a fresh return to live shows, bringing in the new 5 string custom built electric violin. Currently based in NSW, this unique solo show will be showcasing songs from the upcoming album, ‘Salt’, due for release later this year, this is a gig not to be missed, a chance to breath in the world of the Tailor Birds.
Emily Adele Williams is a cello player and improviser performing on amplified/effected cello using various effect pedals, cello percussion, and sampled sounds to multi layer her music which can be described as ambient, drone-like with atmospheric soundscapes. Emily has collaborated on a number of musical projects over her career and and has a solo cello project ‘Night Diver‘ and duo ‘Au Revoir Hands‘ with composer and buchla musician Anthony Lyons.
Night Diver is Emily’s solo music project. Her main instrument remains at the centre, augmented by sounds of sampled glass, steel & kinetic toys pitched & percussive.
The multiple layers of cello and shimmering electronics are slowly interwoven evoking anticipation, longing & stillness.
The music is emotionally charged with revolving arpeggios which drift around a motif of atmospheric, low end drone-like ambience, disquieting moody melodies & airy experimental minimalism.
“Emily Adele Williams is an Australian cello player and improviser. The music blends broad musical styles from modern classical, post minimalist, electronic and experimental avant pop mixing influences from contemporary music creating a wide spectrum of sounds from her instrument from intimate simplicity to atmospheric soundscapes and making full use of technology using her laptop and effected amplified Cello. Her compositions reveal a passion and a deep understanding of classical music rules and most importantly a willingness to subvert them to create lush and breathtaking musical landscapes” – The Age
“Cellist Emily Williams, an innovative and genre-defying solo instrumentalist in her own right.” – Beat Magazine

Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Palais Performances’
Concerts for Listening Audiences with DAVE GRANEY & CLARE MOORE
Live in Concert at the Palais Royale Grand Ballroom
New Rescheduled date – Saturday 19th February 2022 EARLY SHOW: Doors Open Ballroom 3:30pm | Show Start 4:30pm
LATE SHOW: Doors Open Ballroom 7pm | Show Start 8pm – new tickets just released!
Coral Snakes Legends Dave Graney & Clare Moore Unveil New Collab Album “Everything Was Funny”
Prolific alt artists Dave Graneyand Clare Moore — duo with guitars/vibes/keys/melodica.
However they choose to play, they bring their story and their songbook which stretches to over 40 albums.
They make shows like few others.
During the initial Melbourne pandemic lockdown these partners in both life and music started doing online shows every week, sometimes twice a week, and revisited songs from all their albums as well as work-shopping new material. They kept their performing nerve and playing and writing skills sharp. Then the lockdown eased and they played some shows around Australia. Then the lockdown came back again. Luckily their lockdown nerves held too.
They had been planning a rock album with their band, the mistLY, but times didn’t allow it so they made their own album in their studio. The duo’s album is a classic Compact Disc packed with too many songs for vinyl. Somewhat of a cathartic release, it’s an album for the freaks called EVERYTHING WAS FUNNY. Graney, known for his biting tongue and blade-sharp wit, has let fly with even more trademark wryness and cheek.
They’ll be playing some of it, mixed in with old classics from their songbook, along with some choice interpretations of other peoples songs.
When people ask you in the future, “what was it like in those years-2020-2021?” You can begin by stroking your chin and saying …”weeelll… everything was funny”…
Dave Graney was awarded ‘Best Male Vocalist’ at the ARIA Music Awards of 1996 for his work on The Soft ‘n’ Sexy Sound, while “Feelin’ Kinda Sporty” won ‘Best Video’ in 1997 and he has received seven other ARIA Award nominations.

“Tiny Tim meets the gritty story telling of Lou Reed. Songs of avenging zombies, ukulele bumblebees, possessed pianos and a certain air of quiet, small town romance, against an impossibly beautiful backdrop of chook-shed instrumentation”. – Michael Dwyer, art and music writer
Hailing from the Blue Mountains NSW, King Curly is the invention of local singer/songwriter Steve Appel – a long time enigma of original Australian music.
After many absences from the stage, building alternative-design mud houses, King Curly re-emerges to showcase new songs.
Appel is a true creative. His songs and his buildings are beautiful and relevant to the times.
King Curly has toured throughout the world – by invitation with acts as diverse as K.D Lang, Paul Kelly and The Cat Empire.
The band also features Steve Grieve on guitars and Johnny Graffham on pedal steel.
Come and join us for the Blue Mountains launch of ‘Songs’ in this beautiful setting. Recorded largely live as a trio, ‘Songs’ is a new collection released song by song with accompanying home-made lockdown video clips.

A yodellin´, thigh slappin’, lederhosen wettin´ fest of German music from The Beez’ Deta (accordion, vocals) and Rob (guitar, vocals) featuring the Beatific Beats of Julia Day on drums.
You’ll thrill to comic classics from the likes of Rammstein and Kraftwerk; you’ll tear off that dirndl and shake a Teutonic Tailfeather when you catch a glimpse of Nena´s 99 Red Balloons; you’ll swoon to Marlene Dietrich´s Lili Marlene, but wait, that´s not all!
Now those Testy Teutons have their sights set on the rich treasury of Oz Rock. As polka. In German. Wince as Aussie classics are put through the Sauerkraut mincer! Cover your ears as the likes of Barnsey and Farnsy are blitzed into polka oblivion! In The Sauerkrauts own words- “If you´re not a polka fan it’s looking really bad, ´cause this might be the longest evening you have ever had”. The Last Plane Out of Sydney´s almost gone but, regrettably, The Sauerkrauts are not on board.
Deta and Rob always felt that the German Oeuvre was a little under represented in today´s musical landscape, so here they are to make amends with an evening of dance floor-compatible Deutsche Derring-do, featuring Deta´s fabulous “Brunhilde Bass“ accordion. One octave below the conventional accordion bass, this is an Alp-quaking tone of Wagnerian proportions. Melded with Rob´s custom Höfner “Blitzkrieg“ guitar and Julia Day´s Germanic Grooves it´s an irresistible rockin’ polka machine.
Deta and Rob both hail from Berlin; their band The Beez performs regularly throughout Europe and Australia. They´ve appeared on ABC TV´s Spicks and Specks and every folk festival you care to think of.
Fully licensed bar offering a large selection of wines, beers, spirits and cocktails and food.

Sadly this launch of our ‘Palais Performances’ will need to be postponed.
Mickey & Michelle are located in regional VIC and are no longer able to complete the NSW leg of their tour at this time.
We discussed the possibility of proceeding with Little Clouds and a substitute act but with this show booked for 2 days after the current lockdown is scheduled to end, there is a lot of uncertainty of what restrictions will be in place following and if we are to revert to the 1/4m2 requirements then that would make it too much of an unviable situation with all the costs of running the show involved.
Ticket holders have been emailed from with options including transferring tickets to the new rescheduled date, any other Fusion Boutique show or a full refund.
We are hopeful that this will be the only ticketed show impacted and will proceed with the launch of this new listening space series at the Palais the following month with Dave Graney and Clare Moore on Saturday 14th August.
Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Palais Performances’
Concerts for Listening Audiences with
MICKEY & MICHELLE
+ LITTLE CLOUDS (Emily-Rose Šárkova & Nick Henderson)
Live in Concert at the Palais Royale Grand Ballroom
Sunday 11th July 2021 Doors Open 4pm | Performance Start 5pm
Mickey & Michelle are a harp and fiddle duo from Australia who seamlessly blend contemporary folk and jazz together in a rich, unique style of their own.
Their 2019 debut album ‘A Walking Pace’ perfectly showcases the duo’s intricate sound and unusual combination of styles.
Michelle was born into an incredibly musical family and has been performing professionally from the age of 11. Since then she has gone on to perform with the likes of Paul Kelly, Shane Howard and Fiona Ross. Her compositions on the album are deeply rooted in Celtic music while also balancing her attention to detail and nuanced phrasing from her classical studies.
Mickey on the other hand developed such a passion for jazz and his playful improvisations are ever-present in his original compositions. He also takes great delight in reinterpreting traditional Americana tunes with jazz harmony and Afro-Cuban polyrhythms.
The dynamic duo have returned from their most challenging adventure yet; a 6 month tour on foot of NZ’s 3000km ‘Te Araroa’ trail. Mickey & Michelle are excited to share their experiences and music in their home country.
Little Clouds are a subtly nostalgic, feel good singer songwriter duo from Sydney, Australia. AKA Nick Henderson & Emily-Rose Sarkova, Little Clouds write lofty afternoon inspired hits and introspective midnight bangers, laced with clever lyrics and sweet chords that make you feel real good. And let’s be honest – we are all in it for the feelings. They move unassumingly between their multi-instrumentalist personalities of guitar, bass, piano, keys, synths, accordion and vocals. It is intimate. It is real. Journeys will be had.
If one requires some hard hitting musical facts about these two musicians, you might like to know that they are Conservatorium graduates who have played with award winning and very diverse musicians such as Mike Nock, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Elio Franco, Chaika, Arcing Wires, Monsieur Camembert, Duo Ramirez Satorre and Chris Cody Octet.

Love Local Live 5) – THE THREE HANDED BEAT BANDITS
Monday 13th July 7-8pm
FREE LIVE STREAMED MICRO MUSIC CONCERT
Love Local Live is Blue Mountains City Council’s first-ever series of local events that will be brought to the community via live streaming.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “While restrictions are slowly easing, public gatherings are still limited and we understand many in our community are hesitant to venture out into crowds. That’s why Council is still looking for creative and safe ways to engage with you. The new Love Local Live series will bring a little entertainment to you, wherever you are, while supporting and promoting local businesses and creatives.”
More information on the upcoming artists will be posted on the Fusion Boutique Presents facebook page: www.facebook.com/FusionBoutiquePresents . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The Three Handed Beat Bandits are undoubtedly the best three handed little big band in the world today.
Made up of the two-handed John Stuart and the single handed Neill Duncan, between them they play guitar, bass, congas, drums and saxophone, all at the same time.
Megaphone vocals included, this beat combo swing their listeners through a kaleidoscope of musical styles, including reggae, ska, calypso, funk, swing, and a little klezmer thrown in for good measure.
Beautiful to the ear, great for the feet.
Neill Duncan is one of New Zealand’s most exciting and eccentric musicians, now a resident of the Blue Mountains. Three years ago he lost his left arm to cancer. With the help of the community, Neill has been able regain full musical strength. Neill now plays an incredible one-handed tenor saxophone, designed and built in Amsterdam. His passion and musical imagination flow like never before. An adapted drum kit completes the mix, with some additional weird and wonderful instruments.
John Stuart is a master of the seven-string guitar. This amazing instrument allows John to cover the bass as well as provide the chordal accompaniment to the Bandit’s wide ranging repertoire. John is all about texture and space, switching between driving bass lines, and sparkling single line accompaniments. Bass solos? No extra charge. Add in the hot conga playing and all the elements of this extraordinary duo fall into place. Even the silences swing!
Together they are the Three Handed Beat Bandits. Their exotic musical gumbo will steal your heart.

At only 17, Katoomba singer/songwriter, Aurora Li is fast becoming a seasoned performer, playing regularly at live music venues, festivals and events in and around her home in the Blue Mountains and further afield, including Bello Winter Music, where she won the hotly-contested vocal category of the 2019 Youth Mentorship Competition, and the 2020 Illawarra Folk Festival, where she brought home Youth Tradition Awards in two categories. As the most senior member of family folk/bluegrass/indie pop trio, Breathing Underwater, Aurora has played to the packed concert hall of the Sydney Opera House as a featured artist for Pulse 2019, a showcase of outstanding young artists.
Alongside her performance commitments and hectic study schedule (she is currently preparing for her HSC), Aurora writes songs that are sometimes upbeat and irreverent, occasionally sad and angry, and often deeply moving, but always showing a wisdom and insight far beyond her years. Her spare, indie pop/folk sound is complimented by sharply observed lyrics that urge you to close your eyes and listen in, as she ponders the regrets, worries and passions of teenage life with a voice that will gently carry you along for the ride.
People who have heard her sing tend to describe Luca Zumwalt as an old soul. At 8 she picked up her first uke, at 9 she dubbed herself “Ace Evergreen” and she’s been quietly and earnestly crafting a unique musical identity ever since – shaped in one part by her own tremendous gifts and in another by an eclectic playlist of indie artists from Rebecca Sugar to Florence & the Machine, Girl in Red to Weezer. Fast forward another 2 years and Ace has swapped the uke for a guitar, comes armed with a truckload of vocal skill and charm and writes songs pulled from places you wouldn’t think an 11-year-old capable of going. Songs about existential dread, immortality, death, life, love. This is quintessential Ace Evergreen: a sensitive and small soul living an inconceivable conundrum just trying to make sense of it all through song.

One of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists. A mother, singer, producer, songwriter, pianist and business woman, this 5 x ARIA Award winning and 7 x platinum selling songstress first received widespread praise as the angel-voiced songstress of indie-pop band George and has since taken audiences on sublime excursions through Jazz, Pop and Classical music.
“Right from the beginning she has stamped ‘class’ on her career. Very few people achieve the control, range and dynamic – supported by flawless technique, and among the pantheon of female singers she could easily claim a place next to the great Joni Mitchell in that regard.” – Iva Davies (Icehouse)
“Katie is like the voice I have in my dreams. Soaring and no note too impossible to reach. She makes something so difficult seem so easy. Her voice is the sound of wonder to me.” – Kate Ceberano
Katie Noonan’s latest show ‘Late Night Tunes with Noons’ came about quite by accident, in the later hours one night in winter.
Katie posted a short video on instagram of her learning a Hunters and Collectors classic for an upcoming event.
After the response to that first post, the idea evolved into a regular late night video session where Katie interprets some of her favourite Aussie songs from across multiple decades in her intimate and dynamic style.
Featuring songs by artists such as Hunters & Collectors, Tones and I, Jarryd James, Powderfinger, Cold Chisel and more, this event will showcase Katie’s unparalleled skills of re-interpretation, as well as some of her own classic tunes in an intimate solo setting.
Critically-acclaimed, award winning, Australian songwriter Jack Carty has been making, touring and releasing original music since 2010. These years have seen the release of five full-length studio albums; two EPs; an APRA Professional Development Award; extensive touring across Australia, The UK, North America, Europe and New Zealand; festivals from Brisbane to Barcelona; co-writes with the likes of Josh Pyke, Dan Wilson (Semisonic, Adele, Taylor Swift) and Katie Noonan; a #1 independent album; a Top 40 album; and a loyal, grassroots following, built on great songs and a powerful live show.
Join us for an intimate seated Blue Mountains live performance from this fabulous artist as part of her solo “Late Night Tunes with Noons” tour. Tickets are limited and we advise booking early to avoid disappointment! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
Fusion Boutique is extremely pleased to present THE TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD ORCHESTRA (Canada) in the Blue Mountains for their first Australian Tour. This trip sees them perform at Illawara and Cygnet Folk Festivals and other select dates.
The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are a collection of musicians, linked by common sonic journeys and familial ties. From ballads and sing-alongs to high-energy dance parties, they have spent years telling their stories with guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, with melodies and music makers gleaned from their wanderings. The band is from a sparsely populated region of Canada’s West Coast. They travel community to community, bringing people together at halls on the Gulf Islands, barns in the prairies, kitchen parties in towns, clubs in the cities and festivals all summer long.
Their music weaves a multicultural Canadian tapestry: Roots, Eastern European Dance Party, Jazz, Bluegrass, Flamenco, African, Latin, Celtic, Métis, Rock, Gospel, Blues, Canadiana while the band represents an eclectic background – German Mennonite, Chinese, Dutch, Scottish and Métis. These troubadours remind you that this music could not exist without warm bodies in search of harmony.
Australian violinist Simon Watts (String Theories, Skarrat & Watts) and French singer/guitarist Julien Clement (Julien Joel Clement, Disco Frisco) team up to deliver classic French chansons and an assortment of Hot Club swing tunes.
They will also be joined by Neill Duncan on sax and drums on the night too!

Welsh/Australian ethereal-folk singer Sali Bracewell and Australian progressive-roots artist Jordan Mac (Fka. Jordan McRobbie) have teamed up to combine haunting and melodic keys, intricate finger-picked guitars and howling, rich harmonies that hark back to the duo’s Celtic heritage. The two have established independent solo-careers in recent years appearing extensively at Australian music festivals as well as touring nationally and overseas but have joined forces for a brand-new project that melds the contemporary multi-instrumentation of two seasoned and virtuosic performers with the age old whispers of folk-worn ballads.

Smith & Jones are a duo from Bathurst, made up of keyboard player and vocalist Abby Smith, with guitarist and vocalist Sophie Jones. They have never been ones to follow the pack. Though classified as alt-country, their goal has never been to remain within the confines of any genre, preferring to let their sound and their songs take them where they will. Nowhere does this desire for individuality shine brighter then on their newly released second album ‘Something Worth Learning’ which is still full of the charm and joy audiences have come to expect from them This new work delicately balances themes of love and loss, friendship and isolation, emotional desire and freedom, fearlessly exploring the depths of their musical partnership with the listener by their side.
Smith & Jones’ first album, ‘Dark Gives Way’, released in 2017, was extremely well received with it’s first three singles; ‘Baby Blue’, ‘Small Town Woman’ and ‘Your Achin’ Heart’, all went to
number one on the internet’s Australian Country Radio charts and received airplay around the country.
Though their roots will always remain in the foundations of country music, their originals have found an undefinable energy of their own. Part classic country ballads, part sweet jazz standards, and often with a tongue firmly planted in their cheek, their beauty is in their harmonic simplicity and lyrical power.
“They’ve taken the path of making music that they want to hear themselves, whether it’s the catchy pop sounds as heard on the first single SecondHand Heart or Running from Something. A slice of fun with a bit of walking bass and finger snapping, singing a love letter to the “Boss” which was written after seeing him in concert: Last Night I saw Jesus. Then there’s beautiful piano ballads ”One Last Time” and “In The Middle of the Night” which could have easily echoed out around Laurel Canyon in the early ’70s.” – Pat Coomey

Gretta Ziller is an Americana Folk Singer/Songwriter with an ever-growing list of musical accolades. Her name may have more meaning at this stage in her career to the Australian Country Music scene, having recently been a finalist in the Alt-Country Album of the year category of the 2018 Golden Guitars, but just like Lucinda Williams she is as much folk/blues/country singer-songwriter as Lucinda and her placing in the finals of the “Americana” category of the 2016 Unsigned Only & a semi-finalist in the 2017 International song writing competition cemented that.
Gretta was a 2015 Toyota Star Maker grand finalist and has also been involved in the Telstra Road to Discovery competition gaining a spot in the 2013 grand final, that same year she was the TSA/APRA New Songwriter of the year. With vocals that range from sweet folk to gritty blues you’d never know Gretta started off her career as a Classical singer, and song writing idols like Steve Earle, Jim Lauderdale and Paul Kelly, Gretta is finding a multitude of welcoming arms for her blend of Country Folk & Americana music.
In 2017 Gretta has played alongside the likes of Shane Nicholson, Bennett, Bowtell & Urquhart, Brad Butcher, Paddy McHugh & Lachlan Bryan just to name a few. Gretta released her debut album September 1 through Social Family Records.
There are certain writers who command moving melodies and lyrics in equal measure. Dave Wells is one of those artists. The gifted musician has quickly garnered a word-of-mouth reputation as one of the Hunter’s finest songwriters and performers; a master craftsman whose songs creep up on you and cut deep.
Spaciously intense and progressive, his emotionally and sonically diverse debut record exemplifies Wells’ indie folk and alt-rock influences. Across the album, the Hunter Valley songwriter examines social realism through an abstract lens. He sets his sights on the biggest of themes: our inclinations for lust and freedom, moral boundaries, human desire, self-preservation, the cause and effects of love, jealousy and loss.
“This album taps into perspectives on life and society,” Wells says. “Alongside love and hurt, I reflected on a lot of things happening in the world and its effect on each of us.”
Dave embraces his audience through passionate performances, moving them with a voice that recalls the likes of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke and Neil Finn. His spirit on stage engages and captivates, and after several sell out shows since the album’s release, Dave continues to deliver uniquely intimate and memorable performances across the nation and abroad.
“Dave Wells has mastered the honest and beautiful. His songs soar, and his performances soothe.” – KIM CHURCHILL
“Dave Wells is a rare talent. A composer of thoughtful and stirring melodic folk-rock tunes, with a voice to match.” – BEN SALTER

Jon Cleary is one of music’s great anomalies. A Kent raised Englishman turned certified New Orleans music legend after gracefully inhabiting the Crescent City and everything it has to offer over the course of 30 plus years. A Grammy award winning, global touring and studio force, who has graced stages, shared rooms with and gained respect from everyone from Allen Toussaint to Tom Jones, Dr. John to Bonnie Raitt, Fats Domino to Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal to BB King, even Brian May to D’Angelo.
Jon Cleary quite simply embodies the sound of New Orleans, and throughout the second half of 2019, he takes that experience to stages across the globe on his massive Dyna-Mite World Tour, bolstered by the presence of his long time band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen.
After another incredible turn at the famed New Orleans Jazz Fest in April, fans in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia will now have the chance to witness Jon and his crew take to some of the most famous venue and festival stages on the planet across this remarkable 60 date journey, featuring an eight show run at London’s Ronnie Scott’s, a string of European dates with long time friend and jazz legend John Scofield and an expedition to Havana to explore the roots of Cuban music, art and culture.
“Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own, but Cleary’s full combo R&B is as broad, deep and rolling as the Mississippi River, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary’s vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-Meters roll of his Gentlemen” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Metro Social’ with
CHAIKA Live in Concert at the 1930’s Metropole Guesthouse.
Saturday 27th April 2019, 6:30pm. Doors Open 5:30pm.
Described as “spine-tingling” (Rhythms) and “extraordinary” (Fine Music FM), Chaika create worldly rhythmic textures inspired by Balkan vibrancy, Turkish markets, Celtic stories, and Australia’s own stunning landscapes. Fans have branded their genre blending sounds as ‘Nomadic Folk-Jazz’. Employing ethereal harmonies (in several languages), a myriad of instruments and a dynamic ability for discovery, Chaika re-imagine and create their own exuberant music traversing incredible landscapes with jazz-like dexterity.
This April, 2019, they will release their third LP ‘Arrow’ – an almost completely original suite of work injected with the compositional personalities of all 6 members. Chaika comprises of musicians who have written for and performed with a truly diverse roster, including Monsieur Camembert, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Nicky Bomba, The Brandenburg Orchestra, Riley Lee, Mara! & The Martenitsa Choir, The Song Company, The Rhythm Hunters, Kevin James, Baby et Lulu, Marais Ensemble, Elysian Fields, Miriam Lieberman Trio, Alireza Ghorbani, Great Waitress, Tángalo, Klezmer Divas, The London Bulgarian Choir, and The Renaissance Players, on major national and international stages.
At home wherever appreciative ears assemble – from dirt-stomping blues, roots, and folk festivals to the world-class environs of Sydney’s City Recital Hall – Chaika surprise, thrill and move the unsuspecting listener. Decidedly “outside the norm” (Timber & Steel) Chaika traverse another age, journeying an unidentifiable era and landscape, in a manner simply referred to by The Australian as “enchanting.”
‘Extraordinary.’ – Fine Music 102.5FM
‘Spine-tingling.’ – Rhythms Magazine

Nomadic Fish & Fusion Boutique Present VULGARGRAD (Melbourne)
+ Special Guests Raduga Trio (Blue Mtns)
Live in concert at the Baroque Room, Carrington Hotel
Fri 5th April 2019 Venue: BAROQUE ROOM 86 Bathurst Rd (Upstairs from ‘The Harp & Fiddle’ Irish Bar) – NEW ENTRY VIA THE CARRINGTON HOTEL DRIVEWAY –
Katoomba, NSW 2780 Blue Mountains.
Everybody’s favourite Russian criminals make their long-awaited return to Australian stages, launching their much-anticipated new album, “The Odessa Job”. The band has amassed an incredibly dedicated fan-base over the last 14 years, but for those who don’t know, VulgarGrad are a seven-piece band that play music by, for, and about Russian criminals – raw, raucous, and rude (particularly if you understand Russian).
VulgarGrad frontman and infamous Polish ne’er-do-well, Jacek Koman, is the rough diamond of stage and screen, known for his vocals on Roxanne from Baz Lurhmann’s Moulin Rouge and seen in The Great Gatsby.
He has just been released from penal servitude in the chilly film and TV studios of Warsaw, but only on a temporary basis. VulgarGrad are only likely to have a handful of Australian shows in 2019, so make sure you catch them before they get away.
After a tantalisingly lengthy wait (ten years!), the band now has a new album: “The Odessa Job”, launching this April at the recently refurbished Baroque Room in Katoomba (Friday 5th April), and Camelot Lounge in Marrickville (Saturday 6th April) + Django bar (Sunday 7th April 2019).
The first single from the new album “I Remember” (“Помню я”) is a psychedelic Soviet prison ode to the memory of dear mama, who always warned us not to hang out with thieves.
Be prepared for a night of gun-slinging, vodka-swilling, foul-mouthed disorder, and watch out for the biggest, most triangular instrument you will ever see, the contrabass balalaika.
Experience drunken songs, inebriated waltzes, manic stomps, hot swing from the Cold War days along with punk classics of the Perestroika era.
Wear a striped top and learn to swear in Russian, and you will dance or the trumpeter will shoot you.
“Raduga”– from Russian meaning rainbow or joyous arch – is an eclectic, energetic and exciting take on a raw gypsy style. Original compositions and arrangements of melodies and songs from around the world on the clarinet, piano accordion, ukulele and Gitano guitar, flavoured with tap dance and singing in Slavic and Roma languages. The trio plays without looping or digital devices – a truly live performance with high audience participation, expressed in dancing, clapping and sing alongs!

Lindsay Lou and her band keep one foot in The Great Lakes State of Michigan with the soul of Motown, and one in Music City, USA: Nashville, TN. They still embody the soul of a good jam or late night pickin’ session, and also have honed in on a sound that’s entirely their own drawing from soul, blues, folk, jazz and maybe even traces of a techno beat.
As a vocalist, Lindsay falls into an elite category, along with her band of equally gifted musicians playing their own brand of Americana, Lindsay Lou is a not to be missed act.
“This is music that’s caught between the pull of the past and the push of the beckoning future, ready to leap forward bursting with new ideas and youthful energy.” – Devon Ledger, Hearth Music
Smith & Jones are a duo from Bathurst, made up of keyboard player and vocalist Abby Smith, with guitarist and vocalist Sophie Jones. In late 2016 Smith & Jones finished recording their debut album, ‘Dark Gives Way’, with Michael Carpenter at Love Hz in Sydney. This album’s first three singles, ‘Baby Blue’, ‘Small Town Woman’ and ‘Your Achin’ Heart’, all went to number one on the internet’s Australian Country Radio charts and also charted in Tasmania over four weeks. In October 2018 Smith & Jones will be heading back into the studio to record their second album, which will be released and toured in 2019. Though their roots will always remain in the foundations of country music, their originals have found an undefinable energy of their own. Part classic country ballads, part sweet jazz standards, and often with a tongue firmly planted in their cheek, their beauty is in their harmonic simplicity and lyrical power.

“My new favourite Zappa-flavoured, Spaghetti Western, gypsy-eyed, banjo powered, 1920’s/2040’s, Newtown, Balkan band” – John Hardaker, Words About Music
“I described their self-titled 2016 debut album as “Eastern-European, Tango, Balkan, Spaghetti Western, Gypsy, Vaudeville, Theatre, Blues, Zappa meets Trad Jazz’ and I was not kidding! On listening to their second album Home, I now have to add Mariachi, New-Orleans Swing, Cabaret, Film Score, Mexican Cumbia and Punk Rock. This is ludicrous I hear you proclaim. Well so is On the Stoop and I love them for it. Mariachi and Cumbia feature big time but not in their traditional forms. On The Stoop bend and break the rules like no other Australian pop group and they do it in great style and with raucous abandon!
One moment they can summon up Frank Zappa in his zaniest moments and then next moment we’re in New Orleans with a second line street jazz band and then off to Mexico with a modern mariachi band. But these wildly varied flights of fancy are always framed in excellent musicianship in the composition, the arrangements and the playing. The horn harmonies are smooth and slick at times and weird and atonal when the song is begging for bent.
Only a group of highly accomplished musicians could keep up with the mercurial Serge Stanley who leads the band on a very wild ride. Dirk Kruithof contributes guitar lines that are sometimes pure spaghetti western and at other times have the angular attack of a musical chain saw. The rhythm section of Tim Bradley on drums and Joe Manton on bass is completely capable of all the myriad grooves that Stanley’s imagination demands. All the horn players are exceptionally good, playing in tight formation at times and in crazed cacophony at others.” – Peter Winkler, Loud Mouth
“This could be eight different bands from eight different corners of the world except it’s more like one fevered collective musical brain firing off ideas like skyrockets. Look, there’s one exploding above you right now” – Bernard Zuel, Music Journalist
On The Stoop come to the Blue Mountains fresh from playing a bunch of regional shows including filling halls in the mid North Coast and electrifying the dance floor at local festivals.
They are excited to be bringing their energetic mix of genres for a super fun night in the newly refurbished Baroque Room with two sets guaranteed to give the new sound system a great work out!
Comprising of members from Waiting from Guinness and the now retired Belle Jar, The Lost Mariachis play originals in a Mexican and other Latin American style with both electric and acoustic instruments. From cockroaches to butterflies
From giants to circus midgets
From donkeys to stallions
From Mexican jumping beans to cheesy tortillas
All under the cover of a sombrero
From the jingle jangle of the galas to the thunder of Aztec drums
The Lost Mariachis To be found at the Baroque bar.

Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Metro Social’ with
TANGENTS
+ Special Guest BROKEN CHIP Live in Concert at the 1930’s Metropole Guesthouse.
Saturday 1st Sept 2018, 6pm. Doors Open 5pm.
Tangents incendiary live shows are driven by live drums and electronic beats, with processed performances on cello, electric guitar and piano/Rhodes electric piano. Their live show is a natural extension of their recorded work – unique and unrepeatable, featuring an instinctual, organic sense of time & space, rhythm & melody between the five musicians.
Their new album, New Bodies is set to be released by legendary Brooklyn based label Temporary Residence (Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, Hauschka, My Disco) in mid 2018.
After an eventful year of touring throughout their native Australia – including runs with labelmates MONO and like-minded pioneers Tortoise – and featuring alongside the work of artist David Hockney at the National Gallery of Victoria, Tangents return with their new album New Bodies, another stylistic detour that continues their rummage through countless varieties of electronics, rock, dub, noise and jazz that defines the group’s acclaimed aesthetic.
Celebrating the release of New Bodies, the group make a stop at the Metropole for an intimate evening of beautiful melodies, intricate grooves and exhilarating improvisation.
“Tangents artfully mix acoustic instruments and electronics in pieces that combine improvisation with careful processing.” – Pitchfork
“The quintet are so comfortable working with jazz, folk music, post-rock and electronic music that the track comfortably hangs in a space between them all.” – FACT Magazine
“an exercise in beat-laden serenity” – Treble (listing Stateless in their 10 Best Jazz Albums of 2016)
Adrian Lim-Klumpes – piano, Rhodes, vibraphone, marimba, pedals
Evan Dorrian – drum kit, percussion
Ollie Bown – computer
Peter Hollo – cello, effects
Shoeb Ahmad – guitar, pedals
With a contempt for conventionality and a love for experimentation, Broken Chip creates music that is electronic yet organic, machine yet human. Traditional instruments and homemade software are used for this expedition into the sonic wilderness; this Australian artist conducts an orchestra of fat wet boots crunching through snow, of dark leaky basements, of wind whispering through winter wastelands. It’s a lesson in evoking mood.

Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Metro Social’ with RACHEL BAIMAN BAND (Nashville)
+ Special Guests Piccolo Bear Live in Concert at the 1930’s Metropole Guesthouse.
Sunday 7th January 2018, 6pm. Doors Open 5pm.
Americana Songwriter & Multi-Instrumentalist Rachel Baiman Tours Stunning New Record “Shame”
“A rootsy wake-up call” — Folk Alley
In many ways for Rachel, Shame, is an exploration of growing up female in America. Despite the serious subject matter, the overall tenor of the album remains light while the arrangements depart from her stripped-down work with progressive folk duo 10 String Symphony. Shame is lush and varied aided by the production and recording talents of Mandolin Orange’s Andrew Marlin. Musically inspired in equal parts by John Hartford and Courtney Barnett, Baiman’s influences are myriad, however years spent playing traditional music shine through in the album’s firmly rooted sound. Over the album’s ten tracks, Baiman commands attention with songwriting prowess and a depth of presence well beyond her 27 years.
Shame’s musical intensity is rooted within the current American political climate. “I wasn’t necessarily trying to write songs that would be easy to listen to,” Baiman says of the project. “I wanted to write about reality, in all of it’s terror and beauty.” From the title track about abortion politics, to love, sex, and abuse in relationships, to classism and inequality in her re-write of Andy Irvine’s working class anthem “Never Tire of the Road,” the album is ambitious in its scope, yet remains cohesive through Baiman’s personal perspective. In addition to the release of her new solo album, Baiman is the co-founder of a new political group called Folk Fights Back, a musician-led national organization that puts together benefit concerts and awareness events in response to the Trump administration.
As a teenager, Baiman found music to be a welcome escape from worrying about global politics. “I often found the constant discussion of seemingly unsolvable problems to be intense and overwhelming, and when I moved to Nashville to pursue music it felt like something positive, beautiful and productive that I could put into the world. Now that I’ve had some years to devote to music,”—Baiman has been recording and touring internationally for the past 4 years with 10 String Symphony, and has played fiddle for numerous other artists including Kacey Musgraves and Winnipeg folk band Oh My Darling—“I find it hard to escape from the values that I grew up with, and I feel compelled to write politically, to speak out about things that I’ve experienced or seen. Songwriting is a unique opportunity to do that, because it avails a more emotional vehicle for discussion. I love the political tradition of folk music, from Woody Guthrie to Tupac, and my hope is that this record adds another voice to it.”
“a goose-bump-instigating talent that reminded me of a young Gillian Welch or Joy Williams (Civil Wars).” – Z. N. Lupetin, The Bluegrass Situation
+ Special Guests Piccolo Bear Piccolo Bear are a folk bluegrass duo Vanessa Caspersz and Daniel Di Biase from the Blue Mountains. Their unique sound blends dark and sweet harmonies with banjo, ukulele and guitar. www.facebook.com/pg/piccolobearband

Fusion Boutique Presents ‘Metro Social’ with CASS EAGER & THE VELVET ROPE
‘Ain’t No Stopping Me’ Tour
+ Special Guest ANDIE Live in Concert at the 1930’s Metropole Guesthouse.
Sunday 22nd October 2017, 6pm. Doors Open 5pm.
Named by folk-blog Timber and Steel as ‘Janis Joplin and Ben Harper’s love-child’, Cass Eager’s mix of raw soul, husky blues and light-hearted ditties are all punctuated with her unique whisky-soaked vocals. Emotive, slightly raspy, at times tender and at times powerful, Cass’ authentic voice is always the driving force of her music.
Internationally renowned but defiantly grassroots, Cass Eager is one of those rare artists that’s mastered everything from the foot-stomping blues to a sensual slow burner. She’s been called ‘one of the best female singers in Australia’ by Richard Glover (ABC), ’the girl with the golden voice’ (Daily Examiner), and Diesel claims ‘she has a voice so sweet she could sing the phone book and you wouldn’t get bored’.
Eager’s music has taken her to some of the world’s most far-flung places. She’s done several ‘tours of duty’ entertaining Australian troops, from The Middle East to East Timor (with Paul Kelly and Peter Garrett). She’s toured through North America and Canada – alone with her acoustic guitar; alongside Ash Grunwald; and with US musician Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo; ex-Wilco). She performed for Prince Harry during his Australian visit, and after being invited back for a repeat performance, ended up giving the prince guitar lessons.
More recently, Cass supported Michael Franti & Spearhead on their 2015 Bluesfest tour, sat in with Alabama-native Kristy Lee’s Bluesfest sideshows and played alongside G. Love & Special Sauce and JJ Grey & Mofro. 2016 saw her perform with Canadian artist Irish Mythen at Bluesfest and national dates.
A finalist for Best Group and Best Female Vocalist in the Australian Blues ‘Chain’ Awards and Best Blues/Roots Artist in the MusicOz Awards, Cass’ EP ‘Down On My Knees’ was voted one of the ‘Top 10 Albums’ of the year in Rhythms Magazine.
Cass Eager has a brand new beat and she’s hitting the road with her band this October to send new single ‘Ain’t No Stopping Me’ off into the world.
Strange Daddy produced the new track, which is somewhat of a stylistic departure from Cass’ previous work. Lyrically, it’s a testament to her resolve, and sonically it has a vintage Motown charm that hints at an Amy Winehouse swagger but sounds like she’d be more at home drinking tequila with Elle King. As always, Cass has got “more soul than heaven on a busy day”. (Brag)
Her voice carries like the wind and slams you right in your gut where you want it to. She also loves a good story and a good laugh, and her shows are just as much about heart-warming and entertaining tales as they are about the music.
Some artists take a hiatus to write, some to travel, and others to re-ignite their creative inspiration. Cass Eager has done something a little more pragmatic with her recent years, and the result is two small children, Hank and Lois. But she’s back – better than ever – and ready to tell the world to step aside with her new single.
+ Special Guest ANDIE 20 year old Andie has been busking and performing professionally in the upper-mountains villages of Leura and Katoomba since the age of 11 and is deeply connected to her local community and music scene, living and breathing the lifestyle of a young musician.
Electric guitar, an understanding of jazz, folk finger-picking and soaring vocals are brought together to create her unique flavour of soul.

The Green Mohair Suits Album Launch Tour
+ The Haywood Billy Goats (USA)
Sat 26th Nov 2016 Venue: HOTEL GEARIN, 273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780.
The Green Mohair Suits are about much more than delivering new takes on old sounds. Their inspired musicianship has seen them compile a collection of quality original tunes – a solid mix of heartbreak and hangover, humour and humility – that are crying out to entertain a broader audience. Occupying a broad musical landscape between influences like Beck, Fleet Foxes, Hank Williams, Tom Waits, Portishead & Gram Parsons, band member Campeau labels their music “Garage-grass”, adding fans should “expect sad songs and waltzes.” He forgets to add that they should also prepare themselves for a harmonious blur of booze-soaked good times, mixed with schooner-loads of emotion and energy. “See us because we’re super hot and our harmonies are like having an orgasm on a mountain top,” Campeau declares. “The vibe onstage is always great – we focus much more on having a good time than being perfectionists.”
We are very pleased to present the Green Mohair Suits for their latest Album Launch.
‘This album gets into your head the way a green mohair suit would get all over your couch’ – Tristian Lutze
“Green Mohair Suits make music for pleasure. Our Pleasure. If you don’t find yourself smiling, tapping or joining in on one of those harmonies, you’re leading a very sad life” – Bernard Zuel
“Their strength lies in their uber-tight harmonies that blend in virtuosic layers, equal parts Fleet Foxes and CSN. Like local alumni Little Bastard they’ve captured the vibe and mood of their live performances while granting their songs their moment in the studio spotlight. ‘Wooden Duck ‘ is a rewarding blend of bluegrass and both modern and traditional folk music.” – Chris Familton
We are also extremely pleased to present Chatham County, NC based old time dance band The Haywood Billy Goats who are touring Australia for a lot of the summer festivals including the Dorrigo Folk Festival.
The Haywood Billy Goats have become one of the most respected string bands in the North Carolina old time music scene.
Their tight, hard-driving sound and repertoire of traditional NC dance music has earned the band top finishes in a number of reputable string band contests throughout the region as well as numerous ribbons for twin fiddling.
Members of the group have won blue ribbons at prestigious contests such as the Mt. Airy, Union Grove, and Fiddler’s Grove Festivals as well as a first place finish at the 2015 Australian National Bluegrass Mandolin Championship. In addition to being in demand as a square-dance band across North Carolina, the Haywood Billy Goats have played for dance contests at various festivals throughout the region and have performed with legendary NC dance ensemble, the Green Grass Cloggers.
Holding great appreciation for older-generation musicians in the traditional music community, the Billy Goats have spent considerable time playing with and learning from many respected old time musicians from the Round Peak and Piedmont regions of North Carolina. Members of the Billy Goats have also performed with Sierra Hull, Ricky Skaggs, Jim Lauderdale, Chris Henry and the Hardcore Grass, and Mandolin Orange.

The Company Album Launch Tour
+ 10 String Symphony (USA)
Sat 29th Oct 2016 Venue: HOTEL GEARIN, 273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba, Blue Mountains NSW 2780.
The Company are embarking on an Australian tour to release their third studio album ‘Six and Five’ and are returning to Katoomba, following their Blue Mountains Music Festival performance in 2015.
We are very excited to announce that they will also be joined by Nashville progressive acoustic Folk duo 10 String Symphony.
Boasting two Australian Bluegrass champions on guitar, fiddle and banjo, The Company have a passion for high-energy original and traditional acoustic music and have solidified themselves as one of the best bluegrass outfits in Australia. The playing and singing is crisp, melodic and soulful. In concert you witness the band’s virtuosity but also a wry humour and engaging camaraderie. Highly regarded for their originality, they’ve appeared at major music festivals around Australia (Port Fairy, Woodford, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Queensland Music Festival, National Folk Festival, Mountain Grass Festival etc) and the UK (Hebridean Celtic Music Festival, Belladrum Music Festival) and have been featured on local ABC radio and ABC Radio National.
Members include Mick Patrick (Vocals/Mandolin/fiddle) National Folk Festival “Declan Affley” Award winner who grew up in a family band playing bush dances in North Queensland; Jamie Clark (Guitar/Vocals) CMAA Bluegrass Flatpicking Champion in 2011 and described as “a cracking guitarist” by Rolling Stone Magazine; now Nashville based George Jackson (Fiddle/Banjo/Vocals) a 7th generation fiddler and 2012 Golden Fiddle Award for “Best Fiddler”; and Norwegian born Markus Karlsen (Double Bass/Vocals) a highly sought after session bassist in Australia.
“A masterclass in bluegrass” – Sean Sennett, The Australian
“The quartet is at the pinnacle of the Australian acoustic country scene.” – David Costello, Courier Mail
“Fantastic! … This band is raising the bar for acoustic musicians in Australia” – 3-time Golden Guitar winner, Hamish Davidson of the Davidson Brothers
Nashville duo 10 String Symphony began as a partnership of mutual admiration and a much needed creative release valve for Rachel Baiman and Christian Sedelmyer, two 5 string fiddle players and veteran sidemen of Nashville’s music scene. Rachel, a former Illinois state fiddle champion in the old time tradition, needed an outlet for the new sort of songs she was writing, while Christian, originally a classically trained violinist, now a current touring member of the Jerry Douglas Band, was looking to get in touch the impetuous spirit of the rock bands he played in before his arrival in Nashville. With the love of the 5 string fiddle and its musical possibilities as its focal point, the band’s mission statement was as clear as it was expansive:
Two fiddles. Two Voices. Epic music.
And yet, ‘Weight of the world,’ the band’s latest batch of recordings to be released on 23rd Oct, is not at all the record one might expect from a duo of seasoned Nashville fiddlers. This is not a record of showboating no mere polished showcasing of technical virtuosity. Rather, at its core, ‘Weight of the world’ is raw and intimate a nuanced and patient record with designs to move rather than merely impress its listeners. Rachel and Christian’s musical prowess and chemistry is certainly on display for those in the know, but listening deeply reveals that these flourishes are always in service of reaching the listener emotionally the spiritual earnestness of songcraft which keeps us perennially returning to the roots of American music.
ALL THINGS MUSIC has described the band’s’ sound as a “new take on old ideas,” a concept and tension that the duo continues to explore throughout “Weight of the World.” This is showcased on songs like “Someone to be Good For,” where a timeless fiddle melody is underscored by Rachel’s acutely personal and timely take on the search for romantic fulfilment in the midst of brokenness. Or in the searching harmonies and exploratory fiddle runs of a song like “I’m Not Lonesome” While the title may hearken back to the tradition, Christian’s haunting melodies and searching cadences bespeak of an artist that has spent as much time with Wagner and Pet Sounds era Beach Boys as he has with the Seeger brothers.
And perhaps this is what makes ‘Weight of the World’ such a brave record: Its the soundtrack of a process a picture of a band striving to maintain the purity of purpose of the American oldtime tradition, while simultaneously stretching its limitations with unique arrangements, unflinchingly personal lyrics, and a bravely progressive melodic palette.
‘Weight of the World’ is a snapshot of an impetuous band in midstride oldsouls who are passionately determined to speak to our contemporary moment. From the sounds of it, this is just the beginning. - James Wilson (Sons of BIll)
“They do things with fiddles you wouldn’t expect” NPR All Songs Considered “The Newest and Most Promising Voices in Americana”
“…a dynamic musical stew that covers a wide spectrum of acoustic-based roots music, hitting on old-time, folk and bluegrass, all delivered with a dash of rock and roll spunk.” – American Songwriter Magazine
“When each song ended, the two pressed tight into their microhphones, savoring the last strains of the harmony – and even the bartenders seemed to be leaning forward breathlessly, awaiting someone to clap first. Their self titled recording aptly demonstrates the power of a spare, tightly-connected acoustic performance that is given room to evolve – for bluegrass fans, the lightning fast harmonic runs on dueling fiddle is worth the price of admission alone. But it’s the off-road experiments, especially from Christian’s biting bow strokes that will make future audiences take note.” – The Bluegrass Situation
“…Stirring together Old-Time flavors with the broader range of influences brought by an omnivorous musical appetite” – The Nashville Scene
“Really, really beautiful.” – Ricky Ross, BBC Scotland
“An unassumingly intriguing record…something out of the ordinary” – Steve Hunt, fRoots Magazine (UK)

Singer-songwriter Oliver Downes is thrilled to launch his debut album ‘ultraviolet’, with an intimate evening of acoustic song. Formerly of the Blue Mountains, now based in Melbourne, Oliver blends intricate, percussive piano playing with soaring, hummable melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.
Recorded following a hugely successful Pozible campaign, ‘ultraviolet’ is a lush cut of richly orchestrated chamber pop, featuring the talents of Oliver’s sister, Holly Downes (double bass) and Chris Stone (violin) of art-folk trio The String Contingent, who will join him at Hotel Blue.
Traversing territory reminiscent of artists as diverse as Ben Caplan, Radiohead or The Dirty Three, ‘ultraviolet’ offers a rich blend of dreamy ballads and exhilaratingly kinetic acoustic pop, charting a musical passage through the darkness into the light.
“Downes’ compositions and arrangements create nebulous, ethereal soundscapes, deftly woven by the tensile orchestration… Give your mind permission to wander” – The Music

The Metropole, Upstairs “Metro Social” Cnr Gang Gang & Lurline Sts, Katoomba, Blue Mountains
Sunday 8th May 2016, 6:30pm. Doors Open 6pm.
A night of SWING, JAZZ & SOUL in a 1930’s Boutique Lounge with the Escalators for their ‘FROM THE HIP’ Album Launch tour.
The Escalators tip their fedoras to the sophistication of Swing,
the grooves of Detroit,
the rhythmic pulse of Jamaica,
& the funk of New Orleans.
Begin with The Escalators Quartet showcasing their CD releases: a groovy blend of original songwriting & unique arrangements of classic jazz standards. In the 2nd set, a 6-piece band complete with Swinging Horns will take the night away with vintage-inspired sounds perfect for old school swing & rock’n’roll dancing.
The Escalators’ sound is a musical crossroads of creativity & inspiration that gathers fans from all points of the compass: blues lovers, jazz cats, reggae devotees, funk/soul-brothers & sisters.
The gorgeous tone of Jenny Blunden’s voice embraces you & steals your heart. Setting the scene is The Escalators’ instrumental tapestry, all parts woven with subtlety & purpose. Lachlan Mackenzie’s guitar, all harmony & texture, is draped over a rhythmic framework rich in interplay between Bradley Parson’s upright bass & the drum kit captained by Hayden Moore. When they are joined by the Swinging Horns of David Reglar & David Cunningham, it’s time tio push the tables back & dance.
The Escalators are on the road in 2016 with a new CD “From The Hip”.
‘From The Hip’ (2016) boasts 5 original compositions that show this outfit draws on a deep well of creativity, fed by their swing, soul & reggae roots. They also honour the originators on two jazz standards.
The lead single ‘Open Fire’ is currently receiving airplay across the country & reached #1 on the Triple J Unearthed ‘Roots’ Chart.
‘From The Hip’ is a major leap forward in song writing & defining the band’s sound, recorded with a ‘live-in-the-studio’ philosophy on the South Coast & in the hills behind Byron Bay.
Debut release ‘Felix’ (2014) set a course for the band by acknowledging their influences: Classic songs from the ‘30s to the ‘60s infused with fresh flavours from all corners of their record collection.
The release of ‘Felix’ saw the band tour along the East Coast to perform at the Noosa Jazz Festival in 2015, and have their version of ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ make ‘The Best of 2015’ (Soulscope, Northside Radio).
‘From The Hip’ is currently touring the ACT & South-East NSW, with invitations to perform in Melbourne, Regional Victoria, Regional NSW, and return to Queensland for a second tour later in the year.
For this performance they will be joined by ‘The Swinging Horns’ David Reglar (tenor sax) and David Cunningham (trumpet).
Set 1 – Quartet showcasing tracks from their CD releases.
Set 2 – The Escalators ‘Swing & Soul Revue’ featuring a 6-piece band playing great dance music from the 30s to the 60s.

“The band’s Eastern European sound is sort of a mix between Gypsy rock big guns DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello. They’ve got the very ethnic sound of the former, and though they play fast, it’s not at the manic punk level of the latter. The phrase ‘foot-stompin’ also is apt, as their original and traditional pieces have a way of making people move” – Reno Retro Mix
“You know a band is good when at the end of their sound check the audience starts clapping” – New Paltz Cultural Collective
“Best Local Album” – KBOO Radio “Amazing!!!” – VPR
Troubadour Touring and Fusion Boutique Present: The Rumjacks Special Guests Belle Jar (Blue Mountains)
Thur 5th March 2015
HOTEL GEARIN Venue: HOTEL GEARIN
273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba
Blue Mountains NSW 2780.
With their brand new studio album ‘Sober & Godless’ due for release in early 2015, The Rumjacks are hitting the road in February, March & April for an extensive Australian tour.
Born of a desire to make music in general and Celtic-flavoured punk in particular, The Rumjacks are an entity rather askew, cast adrift of the mainstream and the industry as a whole. These five musical misfits from the cobbled streets of old Sydney town are a group unto themselves and the music they’ve made their own.
Since the group’s inception, they’ve come to embrace the oddball world they’ve found themselves in, becoming part of the gnarled, handmade furniture you might say, drawing from a solid base and pushing, stretching, bullying it to their every whim, creating something of their own. You may make comparison to The Pogues, Billy Bragg, The Dropkick Murphys et al, and you’d be right to, but you’d be well advised to acknowledge the twist these five have put to their music themselves, making it something unique.
“Well it’s absolutely vital,” concurs front man McLaughlin on putting their own stamp on this music, something that has led to the band cultivating a marvellous versatility which sees them comfortable on any number of stages, in any number of situations. From their heavy Celtic roots to the driving punk rock rhythms, the cheeky lyrics and rampant, greased up bonhomie that drips from the stage whenever these five step up, this is what The Rumjacks bring.
It’s been this versatility, not to mention the flat-out talent and drive they exude, that’s seen the band share stages with artists as diverse as Gogol Bordello, Guttermouth, the Dropkick Murphys, GBH, UK Subs and The Aggrolites. It’s seen the two releases since their debut EP – the Sound As A Pound EP (’09) and debut long-player, Gangs Of New Holland (’10) – stand up as solid works, finding places amongst the collections of fans of rock, punk, folk, reggae, Irish and god knows what else.
Frankie McLaughlin: Vocals, tin whistle.
Johnny McKelvey: Bass, vocals
Anthony Matters: Drums, vocals
Gabriel Whitbourne: Guitars, vocals
Adam Kenny: Mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, bodhran, acoustic guitar, vocals
Ignited in the catacombs of Paris, Belle Jar brings you the madness and mayhem of infectious rhythms and manic fables.
They play an original blend of Gypsy, Klezmer, Swing and Pop styles, with English and French lyrics. They tell stories of anti-heroes trying to break out of the ordinary that will get you up and dancing.
Belle Jar‘s infectious energy has spread from festival to festival over the last couple of years. Their genuine interaction with people and their passion for what they do is evident. These guys will fire up your old country longings as wild boom-chak boom-chak rhythm meets bent melody.”

Nomadic Fish and Fusion Boutique Present: Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything (Canada) Special Guests – Lime & Steel (Blue Mountains)
Sat 31st Jan 2015
Australian Tour
HOTEL GEARIN Venue: HOTEL GEARIN
273 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba
Blue Mountains NSW 2780.
Limitlessly creative and playful, “The Opposite of Everything” dances down a line between the beautiful and the absurd, transforming Freeman-Fox’s intricate violin compositions into an infectious party.
Winners of three Canadian Folk Music Awards, the ensemble also features Toronto’s finest and most adventurous musicians: New Orleans-style clarinettist John Williams, Klezmer accordionist Robbie Grunwald, Jazz bassist Charles James, and drummer Dan Stadnicki.
Continually redefining what the violin is capable of, Jaron has fused his fiddling roots with a study of Jazz and Indian classical music. At age 14, he began an apprenticeship with Canadian fiddle pioneer Schroer, which lasted until Shroer’s death in 2008. Jaron has been playing his mentor’s custom 5-string violin since.
In four busy years, the outfit has performed across North America and Europe, including Winnipeg Folk Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival, WOMEX in Greece and Folk Alliance in Memphis.
This will be their first appearance in Australia!
“The hyper-kinetic Jaron Freeman-Fox is the Jimi Hendrix of the violin.
With the chops of a classical virtuoso and the soul of a wild-eyed punk, he plays world music in the truest sense of the word, leaping from Gypsy to Klezmer to Celtic to Country without skipping a beat.”
– Ottawa International Jazz Festival
“Jaron Freeman-Fox calls his band the Opposite of Everything. With a name like that, you might expect his music to be pretty adventurous – which it most certainly is.
His new album begins with a remixed sample from a horse auction that melds into Indian vocal percussion. Before the album is finished, you’ll hear growling that would make Tom Waits proud, a version of the Doors’ “People Are Strange” that makes Jim Morrison sound boring and even some throat singing.
Freeman-Fox’s musical exploration has literally taken him all over the world and he finds inspiration everywhere he goes.”
– Reuben Maan, CBC Music
“Jaron Freeman Fox and the Opposite of Everything electrified the crowds wherever they went at Live From the Rock. The exuberance, talent, creativity and controlled insanity demonstrated by this exciting Toronto conglomeration was a joy to behold.”
– Jennifer Ives: Artistic Director, Live from the Rock Folk Festival
With a driving banjo, doghouse bass, a sweet fiddle, Blue Mountains locals ‘Lime and Steel’ take a bluegrass string band, throw in a rock drum kit and a uniquely Australian intonation for a show of originals that moves from pub rock anthems about EH Holdens to convict murder ballads. Lime and Steel’s sweet harmonies twang through Bogan bluegrass love-songs and wind up into a spoon-tappin’ fast-pickin’ wine-soaked hillbilly family singalong.
